Hi Everyone!
I am currently a pre-nursing student at the University of Washington in Seattle, and have been applying to BSN schools in the area; but found out last weekend my fiance and I will be moving to Houston at summers end (which I am very excited about)...meaning I am now frantically trying to find nursing schools to apply to within commuting distance of the Houston area who's application deadline hasn't passed!
Any help regarding schools that offer good programs would be very much appreciated! I would prefer a BSN since I already have over 3 years of college credits, but woulld love recommendations on ADN programs as well!
Also, I was wondering if anyone knew of a college or university that offered Texas State History online or via coorespondence. Many of the programs I have been looking into require it as a pre-req, but I won't have the opportunity to take it prior to begining a program since my fiance doesn't finish grad school until the end of August.
I realize this is asking a lot, but any information regarding good suburbs in which to purchase a home, and nice areas to rent reasonably on a temporary basis would also be very much appreciated.
Does anyone know if area hospitals contract with new grads as they do in the Seattle area?...(ie, they pay back student loans or pay while you attend school in return for a year or two of paid employment.) If anyone knows of hospitals that do this, I would love to know about them!
I also have a (CNA) certified nursing assistant license, I believe this is Texas' equivalent of a PCA, and EMT license through Washington State; and was hoping for recommendations on good hospitals to work at in the Houston area. I'm looking for critical care experience, as I plan on going into ICU nursing, but am open to just about anything.
I know this was asking for a lot of information, but any and all would be very much appreciated! I can't wait to move down there and trade this rain for some great hot weather! Thanks so much!!! :)

As far as BSN programs in the Houston area I would try Texas Woman's University: http://www.twu.edu/houston/ -- they admit twice a year to their BSN program, UT-Houston admits once a year and the deadline has passed.
Other universities/colleges you try and take Texas government online from:
http://www.uh.edu/
http://www.cy-faircollege.com/ (offer ADN program for nursing)
http://www.hccs.cc.tx.us/ (offer ADN program for nursing)
http://www.rice.edu/
I know Houston Baptist University and Prarie view also have nursing programs, although I am not sure what the application deadlines are.

As far as homes are concerned I would go to: http://www.har.com -- this website will give you an idea of what the housing market is like.
I can't really give you any insight as to what part of town is better to live in. It really all depends where you want to be located... close to school, job, etc. We moved here 3 yrs ago and it is still hard for us to get use to the zoning laws (or lack of). Try this website I found on the internet: http://www.harris-county-tx-living.com/
As far as work is concerned the largest concentration of hospitals is in the Texas Medical center: http://www.tmc.edu/ --- this website should provide you with some useful information.
I know there are loan forgiveness programs if you work in a hospital that is short staffed... I think this program is actually through the federal government, try this website: http://bhpr.hrsa.gov/nursing/loanrepay.htm
I hope this helps. You will definately get the warm weather you are looking for, especially if you move to Houston in the summer! Good luck.!
Thanks so much for all of your great help! The websites you suggested were very informative. We were looking last night and are considering the area around Sugar Land, have you heard anything good or bad about that specific area or any other suburbs? Do you know if there are any areas that traffic is consistently bad, other than the normal rush hour congestion...and is that usually terrible?
Also, do you mind me asking where you are going to school and how you like the program?
Thanks so much for your help, I know I'm asking a lot of questions that are very subjective, but any info at all would be great!
Take Care :)

I took Government and History all online through North Harris Community College District http://www.nhmccd.edu
I took government through Kennedy at Montgomery College and did well.
Sugar Land is a nice area, but in order to make it the Medical Center, you have horrible traffic on Highway 59. I am faced with the same problem on my side of town (Northwest Houston and Highway 290) and will probably ride the Park N Ride bus since it is quick and cheap.
Currently I am attending Cy-Fair college, part of the NHMCCD district.
