Moving to Houston Area- Need Your Opinions Please

Published

Hi Fellow Nurses,

I'm new to the forum here. I am planning to move to the Houston area by the end of this year (to be closer to family) and I need your opinions. I am a 53 year old RN with an Associates degree and 19 years Med-Surg and Oncology experience (it's been several years since I've done oncology). I've done a lot of research on area hospitals and several of them look appealing. I am most interested in the following hospitals:

M.D. Anderson in Houston

Memorial Hermann Northeast in Humble

Memorial Hermann in The Woodlands

St. Lukes in The Woodlands

I am interested in residing near Atascocita, The Woodlands or Pearland, as I have family members near each of these cities.

My questions are:

Which hospitals are the best to work for? What pay range can I possibly expect, considering my experience?

M.D. Anderson has an excellent retirement plan. That is something else I must consider, as I'm getting older now.

Thank you for your thoughts and ideas- your input is greatly appreciated!

Welcome to Houston!!

You may want to re-think the idea of working at the main MD Anderson campus. All facilities in the Texas Medical Center share common issues that may be difficult to deal with. You will need to park in a "satellite" lot because there is basically no employee parking available in TMC itself... and you'll have to pay for the privilege. This will add at least 30 minutes to commuting time each day. The commute from areas in which you want to live? Fearsome. If you want to live in that area, it would be best to work in one of the northern facilities that you have listed.

Pearland is a rapidly growing area... with a wide range of housing options. It is also close-in to the Med Center, commuting-wise. Lots of Med Center workers live in the '288 corridor' because it is so convenient. If you like the Pearland area, you may also want to consider Memorial Hermann Southeast.

Sorry, I cannot provide any additional information on salaries. I am sure that others will chime in and help you with that info.

Thank you, HouTX, for your input. The more I think about it, the more I am an leaning toward Hermann Memorial in either the Woodlands or Northeast. I really don't want to spend the time and money necessary to obtain my BSN. If I were still in my 30's, I would. But I'm 53 and not too many years away from retirement.

Hi. I love Memorial Hermann, and worked the last year of my career at The Woodlands. The only reason I left is my husband transferred. I would really like to go back someday.

The one thing to remember about Hermann is that it is massive system, and has the problems of a massive system. But the positives do outweigh the negatives.

The Woodlands as a community is wonderful, as is the north side of Spring.

Feel free to pass me a note if you have anymore questions.
