Moving to Baltimore--quiet/safe areas to live?

Hello all,
I'm relocating to Baltimore--just accepted a position with Johns Hopkins at their main campus.
Would love some suggestions as to quiet, safe, clean places to live/neighborhoods. Thanks for your help and suggestions, Stephanie

Owings Mills--you can take the metro straight from there to Hopkins..you don't have to have to deal with the crazy one way streets and traffic

many thanks for your suggestions. I've settled on Mount Washington for now. Seems like a nice, quiet/safe neighborhood and is relatively close to JH.

I just moved from Owings Mills, loved the area. The Metro to hopkins is a plus living there. Towson, Parkville, Perry Hall all nice areas.

i don't work at jhh but the metro's first stop is owings mills and last stop is jhh. :-)

I would rethink Mt. Washington if I was you.

It is a nice neighborhood but it is in Baltimore City.

When I was looking for a place in the Orthodox Jewish community which is party in the city and partly in the county I called my car insurance company. Two addresses just one mile apart, one in the county and one in the city, and the city made a huge difference. My car insurance would have gone up by a little more than double.

In addition to car insurance, if you think you might buy instead of rent you will find that property taxes are about double in the city and the city has a number of nuisance fees that the county won't have.

Depending upon where you live in the city those costs may be countered by slightly lower rental/real estate prices, but Mt. Washington is relatively expensive and no less than a comparable area in the county.

You might want to consider some areas in the county that are near Mt. Washington. Towson is just a little up the road and the older parts have a similar feel. Pikesville is only about 5-10 minutes from Mt. Washington. Owings Mills is just a little futher away than Pikesville and should be just a little cheaper than Mt. Washington, Pikesville and Towson.

If you are set on Mt. Washington be sure to check on your insurance rates, taxes, and fees before you move so there are no surprises. If you know what to expect and you are fine with it, it is a very nice area to live in.

Pikesville or Owings Mills. I was raised in Pikesville so I like it, both areas are nice. Towson is nice to, anywhere around York Rd. won't be too bad like Timonium or Hunt Valley. The Greenspring Valley area is nice too but is pretty pricey.

i just meant to say that we are in the middle of relocating to the baltimore area also. my husband has been there since february and the rest of us will go as soon as school lets out for the year.

i don't know if you have children in school or not but if you do i found this site helpful: www.greatschool.net for checking out different school districts.

if you are looking for apartments i found this site helpful: www.rent.com .

there was also a site i found that related crime rates and types of crimes for different areas but i can't remember what is is. i might have searched -- wait i think i found it: www.baltimorepolice.org . on the left in the blue box i think you will find "bpd districts" and also, "resources" in the same box.

i thought there was a baltimore county site also but i'm not seeing it right now.
