Most akward situation and how you used tactfulness to overcome it?

Hi all,

I am a pre nursing student, just waiting to get into nursing school. I spend a lot of time on this website trying to soak in all the information I can about the field. My favorite threads are the ones where many people share their real life stories. I think this has helped me have a more realistic view of the profession and I know others feel the same, so keep the stories coming! :)

One thing I have come to understand over time is that a quality that is highly desirable in nursing is tactfulness. I know nurses often times find themselves in situations that may be akward for them or for the patient/patient's family, etc. I was just curious if anyone would be willing to share some of these stories and give examples of how you used tact to smooth over an uncomfortable situation. I'd imagine that many of you do this everyday and have more examples than I can imagine!

Thanks all and have a great night!

akmegs :)

Maybe tact isn't the right word, maybe I mean compassion instead. I guess I think nurses should be tactful and compassionate, so they go hand in hand.

I used tact yesterday when I informed a parent that I would not tolerate a kid acting as she was, much less an adult and that her behavior would not be tolerated. I call it "educational moments" or "shaping behavior."

But then, I'm starting to see Dr. House's viewpoint:lol2:
