:angryfire:angryfire Can't wait for this phony mess to be over. These people are lying through their teeth about caring for patients as well as each other. Here are a few of the things that have successfully pissed me off.. (they are coming REAL SOON)
1. Our CNO advertised in our hospital periodicals months ago that she would be bringing coffee and breakfast to meet and speak to the staff. What is actually happening is her administrators have been calling the units and ordering the staff to purchase breakfast.
2. One of our illustrious administrators wants some of us to come to work in plain clothes (pretending we are either patients or visitors) to spy on the Magnet Surveyors; gather the sort of questions they are asking as well as to report which staff members have fumbled.
3. The Magnet Surveyors are supposed to be having breakfast, lunch and supper with 40 nurses at each meal. The nurses are supposed to be hand picked by the Magnet surveyors. Actual story is that our administration has already picked the ones that they want to have.
4. Two parties have been given to pump the nurses up for the arrival of magnet. Both times, only 20 showed up. For the second party, it got filled quicker when nurses and others were threatened.
Please, just let me announce to nurses, especially new grads, that just because a hospital holds magnet does not mean that they are high quality. The grass is not always greener on the other side. :nono:Don't let the word "magnet status" be the deciding factor to run and place an application. We did not even get it, yet. But, thinigs will not be changing for patients or anyone else.

Thanks for the heads-up...I too have seen similar craziness when facilities are trying to become Magnet hospitals. I hope the Magnet people can see through the "fakeness" of hospitals that are just going for the credentialing to have a big award to stick on their wall. Places should take care of their nurses regardless of the awards they receive.

I used to work for a facility that was trying to get magnet status... the whole thing really got on my last nerves, although it never was quite as bad as what you are describing, pagandeva!
I actually kinda laughed to myself when my hospital got turned down. I don't work there any more and kinda wonder if they are still trying to get it. Probably.

with the exception of a few hospitals, magnet status is often a sham.
if anything, it's more demoralizing to work for a magnet status hosp (or one trying to achieve said status), since the employees truly see and live its irony.

Yes, it is a horrible place to be; we are compromising ourselves DAILY by lying to the public, the administrators and to our co-workers.:angryfire

I use to work at a hospital that was magnet. I was a tech until this past may when I graduated from Nursing school. i got a job at another hospital best thing i did. I hated the place. the pay was lower then other hospitals in the area and they really didn't give the nurses much for for helping get the status.

our facility is going for magnet too... the ends they will go to astound me.....
The way I see it.. and I might be wrong... I dont think I want to work for a magnent status hospital.... where they spend more time energy and effort on trying to look good on paper.. and wear big C's on their forehead... (C= Corporate Clone) than they do the good of the patient.
Our hospital since they started going toward Magnet status... not only has gone done hill I believe in patient satisfaction, but also with employee satisfaction... they no longer care about the employees... quite frankly.. Im sick of hearing "Magnet"....
sorry.. but its my two cents worth.... I guess Im just not cut out to wear the C on my forehead..lol....

I recently had a family member in a "Magnet" hospital. I stayed with her almost 24/7. If I was not there my mother was. We had some great care providers (HCT & RN's) but they where never there. (In the room). HCT can in did VS, set up for bath, Nurse can in and gave meds. What happened to assessments?? I came back from the rest room to find her foley collection bag hanging from the bed rail, and even though she had NGT to low suction & no out-put for 8 hours no one thought until I mentioned it to see if the wall unit was working. I was told twice that it was 'on'.
I could go ON & ON!
No magnet does not mean better!

I'm going to be honest here, from this point, if I search for another job and see that they have achieved magnet, I plan to RUN the other direction.

as i said, do not let the words "magnet" make the decision to have you drawn to that facility. if they offer things that benefit you, personally, then, i say to go for it. but, do not let those words fool you. in many cases, magnet is obtained through highly unethical and conflicting means.
