This morning I was suppose to be in clinical. I woke up about 25 mins after I was suppose to be at the site. Apparently my phone messed up, because when I woke up my alarms (I have several just in case) were "ringing" but no sound was coming out of my phone. Anyways..My instructors say "If you're more than 10 minutes late, don't even bother showing up" because they will send you home.. I still called to make them aware of the situation. I am in my last semester of nursing school and have never missed a clinical before this and I am so distraught that this happened to me!!! Especially because I absolutely love the unit that I was scheduled to be at!!
I feel like I just made myself look really bad at my prospective job-site!! What do you guys think?? Has this ever happened to you??

If you missed/forgot to show up at clinical you are required to make it up. Most importantly speak with your instructor and course Chair for guidance. If you are a conscientious student with no former infractions you should be ok. No one is perfect we all make mistakes. Handling this like a professional is what will define you.
Thanks, I'm just very embarrassed. Do you all feel this will give me a negative reputation as a future-nurse? Because I was really very interested in working on that unit.

Just want to note that many programs do have the ability to allow make up clinical.
OP, just do your best not to let it happen again. It was an accident and not the no for you. As for the facility. They floor staff don't get a roster of who should and shouldn't be there so it's very likely no one except the instructor even knows you weren't there. No worries.

I learned a long time ago not to rely upon my cell phone for anything. Suggest you get a regular type of alarm in place, even a mechanical clock, instead of an electrical clock, for those times there may be a power outage.
Yes just as mrs bot says most schools allow you to make it up and many for a cost my school charges $400. Just look at it as a lesson well learned and an investment in your future. Again no one is perfect don't beat yourself up on something you can't change. Move forward you still have a few weeks left at clincal to make an impression.

WOOSAH...it happens; as long as you out the measures in place for you to get there to the next clinical day, you will be ok. ((((HUGS))))
Yes, my school does allow clinical make-up. I'm going to have to figure that out with my instructor because she did not plan for anyone to have a clinical make-up this semester, since it is our last semester (God-willing). As for the floor staff, they actually were aware that I was going to be there because I had been there the previous day, and told the nurse I was shadowing that I would be there today (HOW EMBARRASSING)! I was so sure I would be there though.
Thanks! I am so not relying on my phone anymore!! Gonna go buy myself a real alarm clock!
Don't bring the subject up with the staff again. You don't want to provide memory joggers for anyone, in case someone might hold one instance of oversleeping against you when it comes time to make decisions regarding hiring. Hopefully that will not come up as an issue.

My cohort signed a document acknowledging we know that missing a clinical, unless for cause, means dismissal from the program. We form buddy teams and call around the morning of to ensure everyone wakes up. I am a night owl who finds positive, upbeat morning types who bounce out of bed at 4 a.m. for Bible study and pilates to be Suspect (in an Eeyore kind of way). But Lord in heaven, if they are not useful alarm clocks.
As Eeyore would say, "Here we go and there we go, gathering nuts and May - we can't all, and some of us don't."
