Ventilator circuit changes

  1. I work in an Intensive Care Unit in England and I am interested in finding out how often you change your ventilator circuits in the US.

At the North Staffs Hospital, West Midlands, we have a standard whereby we change all circuits every 7 days. I have heard that in the US some Units do not change them routinely at all, and there has been some research to show that patients come to no harm. Can anyone tell me what the policy is on their ICU? I am hoping to persuade our Unit that no routine changes would be both cost-effective and better for the patient. Please help.

I work as a Senior Staff Nurse in London on a paeds ITU. We also change our ventilator circuit every 7 days, but change the circuit filter every day or if it becomes water-logged. Hope this helps.

Same here - every 7 days - we use disposable circuits. Australia.

I am moving this thread to the ICU forum so that you can get more responses.
