Terminal weaning

  1. Does your hospital have a protocol or policy regarding terminal weaning from ventilator. Also after terminal weaning what departments do your patients go to and what types of medications are they on?

We have terminal weaning and the patient is transferred to the ward of the speciality they are under. Depending on the consultant, they are either on full medication or antibiotics only. Hope this helps.

Most of our terminal weans are comfort measures only.

Most of our teminal weans are only alive for a short time following the wean. If they it looks like it will be a rapid decline we try to keep the person in teh ICU where the family know the staff and we can give a little more attention to teh family rather than "dumping" them and the greiving family onto the ward. The only exception is of, course if we need the bed.

If however they are long term we will dischrge to the unit they come under i.e. neuro, respiratory ETC.

    Hope this helps.
