Decision Making

  1. How involved are you in the decision-making for your patient's care? When the MDs round and discuss the plan of care, are you included or do you just recieve orders and carry them out?

I'd say very involved -- but depends on the particular doctor. There are a few random docs who know everything and certainly don't need the input of the RN (sarcasm intended). But many ask for the pt's nurse, ask questions, ask for input. I love the doc who asks the nurse "what do you think?". He/she knows I've been with the pt for 12 hours and have a better idea if the pt will fly if extubated, needs a different pain med, needs fluid, could be transferred, etc.
