Microbiology and A&P I

Published

Hi, all. :) I'm new to allnurses.com and will be starting my prereqs for an ASN in the spring.

To get 12 credit hours I have put together a schedule of:

Intro to Nutrition (online)

Dosage Calculations (online)

A&P I

A&P I Lab

Pharmacology

Microbiology

Microbiology Lab

My question is this: is taking Microbiology and A&P I in the same semester too much of a stretch? I already have a liberal arts BA so college is not new to me and I've had a Vocal A&P class before - just for background. What do you think?

Most schools that I have attended will not allow you to take both biology classes together.

I think it could be possible if those are the only 2 classes that you take that semester

the question is, how long has it been since you have been exposed to biology? at my school, they require that a student completes a&p 1 and a&p2 before taking microbiology. i don't think all schools require this (yours is probably different) but it's advise you should probably look into. point blank, you want to do well in pre-req's due to the competition.

so i guess what i am trying to say is, both classes are difficult (on top of the other courses you are taking) and require a lot of study time. you only know if you will be able to handle that work load or not.

good luck to you!:yeah:

Thank you both for the great replies! As far as I can tell the only requirement for Microbiology is one year of science in high school or something in college previously. I'm still waiting on an adviser for these questions. ;)

Vocal A&P was only a couple years ago and I've been studying biology on my own for a few months now so I think I'm fairly prepared.

I definitely understand about the competition - I will see about substituting another class in that place. (I need to have full-time hours for financial reasons.) Microbiology is actually not even required until after acceptance into the nursing program - just trying to get ahead a bit.

I am taking Microbiology, A&P I, Nutrition, and a speech class right now. I was warned by all kinds of people about doing that, but they were my only pre-reqs left, so I felt like I HAD to do it. I am doing great! I made an 80 on one quiz, and everything else has been 90s and 100s. It is tough, but not near as bad as I thought. I do study every day, though. I don't work but I am a single mom of two-year old twins, so I don't always get to study as much as I want. Some weeks, I have as many as 5 or 6 tests and quizzes, and I have had at least one test per week since the third week of school.

I also don't have much of a life outside of my girls and school, so if you have a very full social life or a SO who expects to spend alot of time with you, you might want to rethink it. The way I look at it is that in nursing school, I know I won't have time for a life, and I am just preparing for that this semester. Also, if I can handle this kind of course work now (my first full-time semester in 13 years), then I feel like I can probably handle nursing school.

I haven't had any real science classes since high school, but the little bit of a&p I had for massage therapy school helped prepare me for that class. I think it helps that I love my classes, and I find them interesting. Like you, I studied on my own. I was pre-registered last spring, so I knew I would be taking all of these classes. People had me SO scared! I bought A&P for Dummies, and Microbiology Demystified (kind of the same thing) and studied all summer so that I would be a little more prepared when Fall came. That helped me alot!

Like a previous poster said, only you know if you are willing and able to take on that sort of load. Just be prepared to have your head in a book non-stop for several months :chuckle.

Good luck!
