University of Michigan- Flint info???

U.S.A. Michigan

Anyone have any information about the U of M Flint nursing program? I am finishing my prereqs and trying to get in to the program, but would like some insider advice on what to expect.... I know the basics (what I was told by an advisor- 3.0 gpa required, but realistically at least a 3.7 needed...)

Anyone have any experience? How many times did you have to apply- with what gpa, etc?

Thanks for any advice!

Hi Nicole1224,

Thank you for the information on the nurse's aide information! I would probably wait to take it then. Do you know if they will look at your pre-requisite GPA more than your undergraduate GPA? I was just curious since my pre-requisite GPA will be better than my undergraduate GPA.

My pre-req GPA was WAY better than my undergraduate GPA, so there is a good chance. I think the average pre-req GPA for our class was around 3.8. The website says you should have at least a 2.75, so I would think they are more concerned with pre-req GPA.

Hello!

I applied to UM Flint's Accelerated program for Fall 2011 and am awaiting a reply.....Fingers Crossed! I am also interviewing with Oakland University very soon. For those that are in the program or have already completed it, can you give any idea of how soon new graduates are finding jobs. I know that most graduates from Oakland University tend to get offers immediately. I just wondered how employers are viewing UM-Flint grads? I would appreciate any information you can provide.

Thank you!!

I would like to know what the hours are for the acclerated program for I have a one year old and was planning on having another before I start the program I want to start in fall 2012 so I will need daycare! Also does anybody have any advice on if I should wait to have another baby for after i'm done? I will be 34 next month and my husband will be 40 in may we are trying to decide I feel like i will be too old if I wait til after!

Thanks for all of the information Nicole1224, you have been very helpful! Do you know for the CHM 252 requirement if you can use an organic & biochem CHM class? Also, for the SWR 301 or PSY 313, is that a developmental psychology class or can you use PSY 101 for that requirement? I have them both, but was just curious. I guess I could at least apply to the college and have my transcripts evaluated. I know A&P 1 and 2 from schoolcraft will transfer, but I just have to make sure my organic chem class from Schoolcraft will work too.

Hi Josette19,

I can relate to your dilema. A while back ago I was applying for fall 2009 classes at EMU and U of M and OU, and I got on the alternate list for EMU and waitlist at U of M and didn't get into either. There was only 2 of us on the list that year didn't get into EMU, so I was disappointed. I held off on having another baby because of starting school that year. I ended up having a second baby on father's day 2010, so I took a break from school. Now I am finishing up some more pre-requisites and trying to improve my GPA. I find it hard sometimes to do school, work, and the kids, but I think with enough support and if you have babysitters you can do it. I am planning on trying for fall 2012 classes as well. A friend of mine in the EMU program had a girl give birth during the program and is still in it, but she had to return soon after her birth. I think that would be hard, but if you had the baby before the program you might be ok. I think you just have to take a look at your whole situation and see if you can make it work with another baby. I know how you feel about the age thing being a factor too. That was for me too, I didn't want to wait too long either.

@blk2b1g- I'm not sure of how soon graduates are hired, that may be something you could ask an advisor about. I have clinicals at Hurley this semester, and I have come across a lot of new grads who were hired after graduating from U of M Flint in December. You probably can't be picky, but I'm sure the jobs will be out there, especially by the time we graduate.

@Josette19- the hours for our second semester (this semester) are crazy! We have 3 clinical days, and a full day of lecture, in addition to lots of reading, projects, and care plans. For an example, my schedule is Monday and Tuesday 7-3pm, Wednesday 8:30-3pm, Thursday 1-9:30pm, and I have Fri, Sat, Sun off. Our summer sounds like it will be very busy, but we do not get to sign up for classes until about a week or two before the semesters begin, so planning things such as work or day care can be very difficult to do in advance. I probably am not the best to give advice about kids, because I do not have kids, but I don't think I could do the program with a baby right now. There are lots of students in my program with kids, and I don't know how they do it all, they are awesome. But I know they are all extremely busy, even if their kids are older. Try talking to current nursing students with kids, but personally, I think it would be really hard unless you have a lot of support or dependable child care.

@MelBell2005- For the CHM 252 requirement, I am pretty sure you can use an organic and biochem class. I took mine at Washtenaw Community College, I forget the course number, but it the title was organic biochemistry. For PSY 313, it is developmental psych. Since you have both, they'll look at your developmental psych grade. To double check about any questions, I'd definitely try speaking with an advisor! I took my nutrition at U of M Ann Arbor for my first degree, but that didn't transfer to U of M Flint! I got a phone call last July, telling me my nutrition class didn't transer and luckily was able to sign up for it online before the class filled up. I don't know why it took that long for someone to catch that, but I guess I should have double checked before I took it the first time. The advisors are very helpful though, so I'd check with them just in case.

Hope this all helps!

Thank you for the advice every ittle bit helps! I am so confused on having another baby before or after but I'm thinking I might before! I know it's gonna be really hard but I am taking my pre-reqs right now with one baby and i work too so i'm managing to juggle this right now! My husband helps out a lot! I don't really have babysitters but my mom and sister help when they can I will have to put the kids in daycare once I start the program if I get in i should say! I'm following Oakland's program right now but I am gonna apply at u of m flint too because it's so close to my house and i have a personal attachment to Hurley my daughter spent her first 2 weeks of life there and that is my main reason for wanting to get into nursing i want to work in the NICU I love the nurses and doctors there they are all amazing!!!

Hi Josette, I am also applying to both schools. I don't think you should put your family life on hold. Things will fall into place. I have three kids and I am very scared about how to manage while in the program. I know I will though. We will miss our kids like crazy, but it for a limited time. I think as a Mom, we learn to never stop and we have the stamina for this type of program as long as we have good support around us. My husband helps and ton too and I will also have to do daycare. If nursing is what you want to do, just keep working towards it. Funny, I chose to go into nursing after my son spent 4 months in the NICU too. That is quite an eye opening experience. It changed my life. Good luck!

Got my acceptance letter yesterday for the U of M Flint accelerated program!! So happy:)

Me too! I couldn't be happier! I am so excited to hear from someone else who applied for Fall 2011 and was accepted. I look forward to meeting you soon!

Congratulations blk2b1g and elliesa!
