UD MERCY - Just got my acceptance letter!!

U.S.A. Michigan

Published

Hey All!

I just got an acceptance letter from UD Mercy for the ABSN. SO EXCITED. Does anyone have info/tips? I live in California, so what part of the city should I live in when I move there? Anyone else just get accepted?

Thanks! ANy info is so appreciated!

hi jkb1999!

well... i got my acceptance letter and it said i had 30 days to send in my deposit to secure my spot. so i contacted admissions, and they said i should send in my deposit right away because they only take 60 students... which basically means after you get acceptance, its like first come first serve but it does not say that in the letter... so i waited about a two weeks.. and lo and behold 60 people sent in their deposits.. but, i still placed my deposit and now i am an alternate for january (i think i am second on the list).. but i have a guaranteed spot for may 2010 if worse comes to worse. admissions said that it is very likely that some of those first 60 students will have to drop out of their secured spots, so it should not be a problem to get in for january 2010, but my worst case scenario is may. so if ud mercy if your first choice, make sure you send in your deposit as soon as you get your acceptance letter... the deposit is 500.. so make sure you have it set aside would be my advice! i am from california so starting in may would be kind of nice so i can prepare to move, maybe save a little money and just have more time to move across the country... so maybe i will be seeing you in may!! :) we shall see! all i can say is, getting into a nursing school is a dream come true and i am so excited!

WLJ,

Thanks for the heads up on sending in your deposit right away if you get accepted! Are you sure you want to leave beautiful California for Michigan :-) (kidding) Yes, May would be a nicer time wheather-wise to come but hopefully you get into the Jan 2010 so you can start sooner. For me becoming a nurse too will be a dream come true!

May I ask what your background is/was and your GPA ect to get into U of D??

Congrats again! JKB

Congrats! I just got a call last week that a spot had opened up in the January cohort at UDM and I'm in too!!! They called and I charged my deposit over the phone that same day. Can't wait to start!

I just got my acceptance as well to U of D for MAY 2010!!!! I am looking into ways to finance it right now! I have a friend of my sil who is in the program so I am going to contact her to get the insider perspective! Anyone else for May 2010? I am also waiting to here back from U of M and am no longer going to apply to Wayne State as their program is 16 months.

Congratulation!

I too am interested in the UDM ABSN program, but am concerned about financing. I look forward to hearing about how you acquire it.

Does anyone know of anyone accepted into the program who could not start or complete it due to financing issues? If so, please share. I'm trying to get a feel for how much assistance UDM offers in regards to the acquisition of financial aid.

Thanks!

I am starting the UDM ABSN program in May! I'm also figuring out how to finance it right now. Its probably going to involve a lot of loans....

I have to get moving on the no worker left behind as I guess the waiting list is long---they give $5000 per year up to $10,000. I am not sure how much financial aid I can get as my husband has a good job. I started combing thru U of D's website on assistance and will go from there. I will also talk to the my sil friend and see if she has any scoop on financing.

I'm starting the SDO program at UDM in January 2010. It is pretty costly, but depending on your GPA (3.5+), UDM offers a grant for up to $16,500 for the program ($5,500/term x 3 terms). I am also expecting $5000 + books from NWLB, $2000 from the MI nursing student loan program and $2100 from the MI Tuition Grant. I will be taking out federal student loans for most of the remainder of the balance - based on my calculations, after everything's said & done, I should only have to pay about $500-$1000 cash for the program.

I'll try to answer some of the questions I've read about the program - I applied to the program in March 09, and began taking my prereq's in April 09. I was accepted in October 09 to start in January 2010, conditional upon completing my remaining prereq's before January. The way I understand it, UDM will consider you for admission to the program once 4 of the 5 science prereq's are completed, you just have to finish them before you start. My 1st degree GPA was 3.83. My prereq sciences GPA is 4.0. UDM allows you to CLEP some of the non-science prereq's (I opted not to do this though).

I looked at OU's program, but the wait was too long. I know that UDM is more costly, but after the grant and NWLB, it ends up being about the same as OU's program. I calculated that I will be done with my program and working for 6 months before I would even start at OU! I figure that I'll earn more working those 18 months than the cost difference between the programs!

I know I had so many questions when I was applying - hope this info was helpful!

Good luck!

Thanks for the extremely informative post, Kristine!

So, based on a total tuition balance of $48,000, does that mean you'll be taking out about $22,400 in federal student loans? Just curious: Do you know what the current maximum lent per year is via the government loan programs? (I really need to get my FAFSA started and do some financial aid research.)

Thanks again for the helpful info.

A January 2011 (or sooner) UDM ABSN Hopeful

Kristine,

If you wouldn't mind--how did you go about getting the NWLB and was it from the Wayne County offices?

Also do you know how difficult it is to get the grant thru U of D? I am not sure what GPA they will use as I had a 3.89 undergrad and have a 4.0 thus far for the pre-req's.

Hi Wendy! That sounds about right for the loans. And I don't recall the maximums. I would suggest that you call the financial aid office at UDM or whichever school you are considering and ask them. Before I was accepted, I wanted to make sure that I would be able to swing everything since I'm not working so I called financial aid at UDM and they were extremely helpful answering all of my questions. As I recall, I had to leave a message, but someone got back with me in a couple of days.

I have been very impressed with UDM thus far. Everyone there is very helpful and it seems to be a well organized program - can't wait to get started!

kristine,

if you wouldn't mind--how did you go about getting the nwlb and was it from the wayne county offices?

also do you know how difficult it is to get the grant thru u of d? i am not sure what gpa they will use as i had a 3.89 undergrad and have a 4.0 thus far for the pre-req's.

no, i'm in macomb county. i started the nwlb process back in april. since then, i have taken a test, attended a couple of mandatory sessions, taken a mandatory study skills class, and had paperwork filled out by financial aid at udm - it's quite a process! i had a period of about 4 months where i was just waiting for my udm acceptance letter before i could go any further, but i think they've changed some things since then. i guess what i'm saying is that it doesn't necessarily take 8 months, but if i were you, i'd stop by your local michiganworks office asap to get the ball rolling!

as far as i know, everyone is eligible for the udm grant. since the maximum grant is for a min. 3.5 gpa, you should get the max. no matter which gpa they use. this is quoted from the udm transfer student brochure available on their website www.udmercy.edu:

[color=#f60026][color=#f60026]

"the udm academic grant program makes a great education accessible by providing renewable,

full-time grants ranging in value from $6,000 to full tuition per year (

see table
).

examples of such full-time grants are listed below:

2.0 – 2.49 gpa.................. $6,000 2.5 – 2.99 gpa.................. $7,500

3.0 – 3.49 gpa.................. $9,000 3.5 – 4.00 gpa.................. $11,000"

note that the program is 3 terms, so to calculate your grant for the entire program, multiply the above amounts by 1.5.

good luck!
