MSU or LCC?

U.S.A. Michigan

Can anyone comment on either of the following programs: the Accelerated Second Degree BSN program at MSU or the Accelerated ADN program at LCC? I already have a Bachelor's, and I'm trying to decide which program to pursue (they are both 14 months, both leading to RN).

I've heard tons of good stuff about LCC's nursing program, and it's also much cheaper than MSU. I haven't heard anything about MSU's program, but it would give me a BSN rather than an ADN in the same amount of time. It's hard for me to try to apply to both because the pre-reqs are slightly different. I think overall I would prefer doing LCC's...but their programs are so competitive, I don't know if I would get in or not.

Please offer me your two cents on my dilemma! I would love to hear about people's experiences in these programs. Thanks!

I applied to both programs as I also have a Bachelors degree. What is your GPA, any work experience, volunteer? Both programs are extremely competetive. I was fortunate enought to get into LCC's traditional program, and didn't have enough points to get into the accelerated program (the cut-off has been 45 for the last 3 years, it jumped to 52 this year). I applied to both of MSU's Nursing programs for 3 years and never got in. I have a 3.0 GPA, but my science GPA is a 3.5, I have a year of volunteer service at Sparrow Hospital, and have leadership and management experience. That was not enough to get into either of MSU's programs. I would rather have gotten a BSN, but I look at it this way, LCC has a better program, it's cheaper, and both Sparrow and Ingham pay the same whether you have a BSN or ADN and they will pay for you to get your BSN. So in my opinion, LCC is a better deal. I know a lot of people that work at Sparrow, including family, and they all say that LCC nursing students will get hired over MSU students because they have more clinical experience that MSU students. I hope this helps, I've been going through this process for quite sometime, if you have any questions, you can send me a message. Good luck with whatever you decide!

I got a BS in Human Bio fom MSU and my ADN from LCC in their accelerated nursing program. I was in the first group of accelerated students and I loved the program. The reason why I chose to go the LCC route was it was much cheaper than MSU and I was able to work part time while doing LCC. I was a bit worried about not just going for the BSN but I get paid the same as students with a BSN. I am currently doing a ADN-MSN bridge program for people who have a BS in another field. There are a couple of schools that have programs like this so you can essentially get your MSN/DNP in the same amount of time as if you got your BSN first.

AnnaN5, where are you doing the bridge program? I'm probably going to get my MSN and was wondering where they have bridge programs like that. Thanks!

GVSU and UofM have programs like that and I think there are a couple more. It is kind of tricky right now because they are phasing out the MSN and making them all DNP programs so all the schools are working on the new curriculum. I am doing mine through UofM-Flint completely online, they also do classes at LCC's university center if you prefer to do in person classes.

Thanks for your comments. I have really good grades (4.0 in my prereqs so far, 3.8 GPA from by bachelor's) and I also volunteer, so I'm hoping I will have enough points to get into LCC's program (fingers crossed!). I've spoken to some nurses in the past couple of days and they've basically told me, BSN or ADN-- no difference in pay/hiring. So I think I'm going to go with the cheaper and more reputable (?) program at LCC. If I ever want to go in a different direction in the future, I'll just end up doing an RN to BSN program.

AnnaN5-- could you comment a bit more on the acc. program? What your weekly schedule was like, how the instructors were, etc? Thanks!
