Mental Health Nursing in Aus or NZ?

Published

Specializes in CFP.

Hi everyone,

At present I'm a student studying to become an RMN, my wife is already a qualified RMN and on qualification we are looking to relocate to eiter Aus or NZ. Obviously being from the UK our knowledge of specific areas is scant so.....

1) Are there any major disadvantages of moving to either country to take up the profession?

2) We would look to move into or close to major conurbation thus increasing the number of employment options, is this a sound propostion?

3) We would be looking to rent initially then move into the property market using our savings plus a mortgage. Are there any issues with Nurses obtaining mortgages and if possible could someone advise on the the round about amount (I.e. 2x, 3x of income) that the mortgage lenders are prepared to offer.

Well enough there for a starter I have to admit Melbourne or Auckland are winning the race at present, though NZ is on top due to no 30 day quaratine for Muttleys. Thank you in advance for anyones advice

Mike

Hi Mike

I moved over to NZ with my family 3 years ago had no problem getting a morgage at all.Much easier than the UK ,you can usually have it all sorted with in a few weeks of arriving in the country as long as you have a permanent job and some money to put down as a deposit. They will give you at least 3 times your wages.

I live in Hamilton at present which is a small city ,but it is growing quickly. It is 120 k from Auckland and has the Raglin surf beaches about 35k down the road.

I came over as a staff nurse but got a clinical nurse specialist post with in 2 months. I now manage a rehabilitation ward. We have plenty of opportunities for work for MH nurses over here as I am at presently redeveloping the forensic and rehabilitation service.

Life is not as fast as Aus but the country is wonderful, if you like the outdoors, sport, fishing and travel this the place for you.

The one thing I found over here was how supportive they are of further education, lots of support with doing post Grad masters if you are interested.

Hey Mike,

Why don't you just contact HealthStaff Recruitment, tell them what your situation is and they will discuss your possibilities. I have worked for them and found them very comforting - it was a big step for me to move to another country - but they were always there for me...
