I live by my Lange

Neonatology: Mangagement, Procedure, On-Call Problems, Diseases, Drugs

by Tricia Lacy Gomella

i keep a copy of "[color=#003399]newborn intensive care: what every parent needs to know" by by jeanette zaichkin in my locker, so i can copy and provide info for parents as needed. it covers everything, and it's in plain speak... so parents can easily understand what their child is going through.

it's a great book.

What do you recommend of these lists for a brand new nurse (well almost) going to work in the NICU?

If you had to pick one that is...

Handbook of Neonatal Intensive Care (mentioned above) is great and it's considered by many to be one of the most authoritative sources for NICU personnel. You'll sometimes hear it referred to as 'the Merenstein-Gardner' (the names of the authors).

I also have Lange's Neonatalogy by Gomella and it's pretty good too.

I'd recommend this book for parents:

"Your Premature Baby: Everything You Need to Know About Childbirth, Treatment, and Parenting" by Frank Manginello and Theresa Foy DiGeronimo

I'm doing my "transition" course in a level 3 NICU and I'm pretty much clueless to what goes on in there. What's a simple book that isn't TOO detailed that might help me through this semester? I'm looking for something w/ normal lab values, common meds, common treatments...anything to give me some sort of idea on what will be going on with my patients. Thanks!

i received an offer from a specialty hospital to work in the NICU. Im currently w0rking at a med-surg unit and have been exposed in the NICU for just about 12days during my orientation. I have no idea where to start preparing myself. Need a little help pls. thank you.

Merenstein and Gardner (imho) remains the best entry level text. A new edition came out in 2010. Available on amazon. Start there! And---Best Wishes for success! (Hopefully, they will give you a thorough orientation-like ~ 12 weeks.)

Merenstein & Gardner's Handbook of Neonatal Intensive Care - Paperback (Apr. 1, 2010) by Sandra Lee Gardner RN MS CNS PNP, Brian S. Carter MD FAAP, Mary I Enzman-Hines RN PhD CNS CPNP AHN-BC, and Jacinto A. Hernandez MD PhD MHA FAAP

Specializes in pediatrics.

The bible on prematurity for parents is: "The Premature Baby Book" by Helen Harrison. It's older, but I've seen nothing better than this yet.

For nurses, I highly recommend "Baby at Risk" by Dr. Ruth Levy Guyer. It covers the ethical side of prematurity, and highlights the history of neonatology, presents actual case histories of infants as they are growing up.
