    EMTALA

I'm working a travel position. An intoxicated woman came in requesting detox, and staff told her they don't provide that service, but XXX hospital in YYY city does, you should go there. Patient left because she was told we couldn't help. Sounds like ...

    Proper MD orders

I suggest describing the practice to your board of nursing and getting the official interpretation as to it being legal or illegal, and passing that information to nursing administration, and your colleagues.

Addressing Walk Ins in Primary Care

That makes sense to me. they get their results slightly sooner than if they waited for the phone call, and you get your prioritized work done before you look up their chart. I'd add "It could be hours, but you are welcome to wait" to that spiel.

    Nursing Guilt

Cats are little ***. I've had a lot of them, and called in because they were sick too.

What to do when a patient alleges staff abuse?

Id inform the patient that unless they give permission for you to inform your supervisor, no one will know who they don't want caring for them. You don't have the power to rearrange staffing without a reason. You can let your boss know the patient ha...

What is the toughest part of nursing?

Two faced administration saying "we're behind you" "we support you" but theres no evidence of that except a new checksheet we have to fill out every year. It's very discouraging to bust your butt, and then reprimanded for not going above and beyond. ...

    Emergency critical thinking

If you have a patient thats very ill rehearse in your mind what might go wrong. Check to see that you have the equipment or that you know where it is if you need it. Gradually you'll be the one with new ideas, don't be worried if you arent right now....

    Any advice would be great

As a LEO you've been in charge, but be aware that some of those nursing professors will want to be the boss of you from the beginning. Knuckle under, for your own sanity.

"Addiction" Nursing is an outdated term.

Changing the name doesn't change the bias.

Things you wish doctors would do/say differently?

True, if you are discharging the patient please let them know they need to allow time for the process after you put in the order. When I'm calling in the middle of the night I really don't want to bother you, but it's the job. I'm worried, and s...
  13. They absolutely have a lack of access to routine preventative care. In my province about 1/3 of the population cannot get a family doctor. I have one, and it takes 6 weeks for an appointment, if you can get the secretary to answer the phone. Since I ...

Anti Vaxxer I Knew Became A Nurse

I'm not antivax, but I was thoroughly offended when they mandated Covid shots before they were approved by the FDA. I am not a science experiment. There are more reasons than stupidity to decline mandated vaccines.

    Crusty Old Bats

One more. I miss the Rolodexes that had numbers available from the dawn of time. You had extensions for unlisted government offices, doctors relatives and their side chicks, the maintenance number plus a few home numbers to try, and then Joe Plu...
