  2. new RN's in specialty areas

Kristeh said it the way how I meant..maybe I didn't phrase it properly. I mean that when you start on a unit you may have some older nurses that have forgotten that they were once new..and that they didn't have a clue, but someone took the time and e...
  3. Bad Rep for Med Surg

Can't wait too..got a few more months before I am eligible to sit for my CMSN...can't wait. My hospital actually gives a bonus to nurses who become certified in their specialy..was $500/year now going up to $1,000/year and they pay for the test.
  4. port-a-cath dressing change--needle change?

Please correct me of I am wrong, but I thought that implanted ports are primarily used for patients undergoing chemotherapy. Veronica, I also work on med/surg..and periodically we get oncology overflow. Once a port is accessed, it has to be deaccesse...
  5. Bad Rep for Med Surg

I agree nursing is nursing no specialty better than the other, some different than the other, but when it all boils down to it, it is still nursing at the end of the day.
  6. new RN's in specialty areas

Well all have to start somewhere as a new grad..it is unfortunate that you have some nurses who feel as though they were born nurses and never had to start from scratch.
  7. new RN's in specialty areas

Can anyone tell me...since when is med/surg NOT a specialty? I might be a little biased, but when the nurses get pulled to our floor from the "specialty units" they can't have more than 3 or 4 patients and wonder how we handle so much on a daily basi...
  8. new RN's in specialty areas

I agree working on a meg surg unit will enhance assessment skills since there aren't monitors to tell you what is wrong. A year or two would be great before going to a unit. AND HEY MED SURG IS A SPECIALTY TOO!!!
  9. Should I hang it up before I get hung up?

I like that Ruffles 1 "we have to focus on the whole patient" That was well put. We really are challenged on a daily basis.
  10. Floor Nurses

OMG how did I forget about that!!! Yeah medsurg gets dumped on all the time..but we are extremely hard workers. And the report thing..yeah they call and call and when you can't get to the phone because your tied up your nurse manager calls because th...
  11. I want to quit after one month....

I am sorry to hear that. I hope you feel better. That is a tough question. I would figure out the pros and cons of staying and going. The good thing is that the weather is about to break, so you don't have to worry too much about the snow and icy con...
  12. Floor Nurses

I would say it depends on the hospital and the type of floor you are on. On my unit it is extremely face paced..they told us in Jan. alone we did 600 admissions!!! So you can only imagine. Some nurses have stayed 2-5 yrs and there are a few that have...
  13. Advice needed for new grad entering Med/Surg

The only advice I have is take notes and ask questions. Don't be afraid to ask question for fear of being looked at as being stupid. No question is silly..and if you don't know or understand something say so. We all had to start as a new nurse(even t...
  14. How many patients?

I totally agree, but unfortunately w/ administration they don't look at the type of pts they look at the census and then will tell you how many"staff members you are alotted" for a certain number.
  15. How many patients?

On my unit at times the charge nurse has a "full assignmen" (6-8) people depending on staffing, and sometimes she may even be precepting someone. Now that is CRAZY!! I have to say thought things have been getting a little bit better lately.
