What is the rationale for Flagyl in addition to other antibiotics

I am seeing a lot of patients coming from hospitals on Flagyl in addition to other antibiotics such as Levaquin and Cipro. I will be grateful if someone can refer me to an evidence-based resource regarding the rationale for adding Flagyl. Thanks!
