  1. NPO for labor?

When I was in labor with my 2nd, I was eating a peanut butter sandwich at 6 cm- and had no nausea or other problems- but I also had no meds and no epidural. Only the midwives at my facility allow this- all of the MD's order NPO except for ice chips.
  2. phone calls no outsider would believe

We get so many of these because my hospital recently axed the "Ask A Nurse" Line due to "increasing costs." We have been keeping track and recently counte 20+ advice calls in one 12 hour night shift. Another one of my favorites- Male caller asks- "...
  3. phone calls no outsider would believe

Female caller asks- "Is dog semen harmful if swallowed?"
  4. ER policy/unresponsive pts

I work weekend nights in the ER closest to the University here, so I frequently deal with this situation. Our policy is not to let visitors back with patient unless they are immediate family (mother, father, sibling, etc) if the pt comes in extremel...
  5. ER: The dumping place

I don't think that the above poster is really referring to pts who actually are admitted to the hospital- its the pts that come in with "vomiting one time" by ambulance and then demand a free taxi ride home that are over taxing the system.
  6. Rules for the ER (long)

Don't ask me to call your boyfriend to let him know you're here and when I tell you that you will have to call him yourself, reply "But I don't know his phone number." If you don't know it how the h*** and I going to?
  7. Most embarrasing moment as a nurse/ma/cna

Was inserting a foley catheter into MY CHILDS PEDIATRICIAN'S WIFE with said doctor in the room. Had just eaten a piece of chocolate that made my mouth water. Was a somewhat difficult insertion due to a combination of her anatomy and heavy vag bleed...
  8. 1st, 2nd, 3rd shifts? 12 hour evening shifts?

    In the ER where I work we have 7a-7p, 9a-9p, 11a-11p, 1p-1a, 5p-5a, 7p-7a
  9. SHOES: Are Dansko comfortable?

Dansko's are the only shoes that don't cause my feet to hurt after a 12 hr shift. They take 4-5 shifts to break in- I took another pair of shoes to work with me the first couple times and alternated them with the danskos. I wear the Professional Cl...
  10. My mystery patient

Are WBC elevated? Infectious process- meningitis or encephalitis- might be the culprit. BUN and Creatinine can normally be this high in a chronic hemodialysis patient.
  11. If you own Danskos did you...

I just bought new Danskos this week and was told by the salesperson that they should fit very snugly around the top of your foot. He stated that they will loosen over the next few weeks because they "stretch out" quite a bit. Mine are not tight arou...
  12. How much do you do?

It all depends on who the nurse is. If it is someone who normally does their work and was just extremely busy, I usually will cover for them or finish whatever was not done. If it is someone who is habitually lazy/forgetful I will not.
  13. HTN urgency with IV Beta Blockers

I would personnally not feel comfortable pushing IV Beta blockers without a cardiac monitor. I believe this is also hospital policy where I work.
  14. OB pataients in the ER

I too am angered with my hospitals response to this. Myself and several other nurses in the ER have requested training and the hospital has continued to refuse.
  15. OB pataients in the ER

We do have fetal monitors and warmers but are "forbidden" to hook up the patient to the fetal monitors before the L&D nurse is there. The hospital has refused to provide us training in OB because they states this creates too much of a liability....
