  1. How did/do you pay for nursing school?

I paid pre-Reqs out of pocket at CC while working. Once in my ADN program, I got a low interest 12,000 dollar loan through PEO, they are a philanthropic women's education group. (Interest was like 1.5%). I also got a scholarship and worked until my t...
  2. TERRIFIED

I graduated in December and passed the NCLEX in January. I was/am 43, and my oldest was 2 when I started my prerequisites. He is 8 now. The most important thing for me was having my husband and family on board 100% so I could focus on school. It is ...
  3. Why would a nurse push IV potassium?

My nursing instructor always said they only IV push potassium in Texas.
  4. All As atm

Congratulations! Just make sure you take care of yourself.
  5. Helpful Items to Purchase for Nursing School

    Compression socks are the best.
  6. Mom guilt

I'll give the perspective of someone who's mom worked while commuting to school for her masters in nursing, it was fine. It was harder on my Mom and what she though she should be doing than my brother and I. We are very close. I returned to school to...
  7. wanting to become RN

Look at it this way, unless you find misfortune, you are going to turn 62 no matter what. Do you want to turn 62 doing what you want to do?
  8. UWORLD?

I took the NCLEX in January and primarily used UWorld. I liked it. The rationales were good, and comprehensive, plus there were a lot of delegation, prioritization, and SATA. I also used ATI, because that was what my school used. I did pass.
  9. Struggling in 2nd semester

I think feeling overwhelmed is pretty normal. I just finished my ASN, and what I found helpful was arriving at clinical early, getting my assignment, and then looking up patient history and medications. So that I wouldn't get in the nurse's way, if t...
  10. Tips for older new student?

I just finished my ADN, and passed the boards at the age of 43. Unlike yourself, I didn't have a bachelors degree, I just picked up a AA-general studies while doing pre-requisites. I did it with an eye towards getting my BSN. Fortunately, my hospital...
  11. Not sure if I should stay in school

Former zookeeper turned RN here. I spent twenty years working in the animal field, so just some practical advice on that. If you want to work in the animal field, and feed yourself, you need a 4 year BS degree. There are a ton of low paying jobs that...
  12. Career change, nursing school and motherhood

I worked 30 hours a week my first 3 semesters of an ADN program and have two kids (now 6 and 8). What got me through was my husband being 110% on board. I also was able to round up a couple of loans and a scholarship when I finally quit my last semes...
  13. 99% sure I failed NCLEX

I hope you get good news. I felt terrible when I walked out, I was sure I failed.
  14. Failed NCLEX 2x....PLX Help with ME priority questions

For prioritization, we were told ABCs, Maslow's heirarchy, change in LOC, acute before chronic, and chest pain were useful in figuring out priorities. And safety, always! I found UWorld helpful, it had a lot of SATA and prioritization questions.
  15. UWorld to study for the NCLEX?

I used UWorld to prep for the NCLEX and felt it was very helpful. They have good rationales, lots of SATA, delegation, and prioritization questions. I did the whole question bank, flagged those I felt I needed to review, and then went back over the ...
