I've been an RN for 5 years, and have only worked in med surg units. I'm starting to look around for an ICU job. Do you think getting certified in med surg could help at all in getting a recruiter's attention? As a way to show a general knowledge base? I have a good variety of experience (surgical, ortho, trauma, and transplant) and wouldn't need to invest much time in studying, just the cost to take the exam. Thanks!

If I had to pick between two equally qualified candidates I would chose the certified nurse. Having a certification shows that extra drive. Also, it shows that you have proved yourself by passing a nationally accredited exam to validate your knowledge base. Just the effort of studying for the certification exam helps one become a more proficient nurse.
