Medical University of Ohio Grad school?

Loiuse I have lived in Ohio my entire life and have family in Ventura. Ohio is a very wet state. It rains alot. You can go weeks without any Sunshine. If you like changing climates it is great. Fall is pretty. It snows, it can be very icey and sometimes it snow ALOT due to lake effects snow/dumping of large amounts of snow coming off the great lakes.

I assume your talking about MCO ( medical college)? I know they just merged with another partner, school and changed their name.

What would you like to know about Toledo/Ohio?

Hi Renerian--

Thanks for the Ohio weather report!! The program is with Medical University of Ohio (it used to be called Medical College of Ohio). There's something about the program that appeals to me. The admissions rep has been extremely helpful, as compared to the other programs that are so impersonal and competitive. I almost think leaving everything behind to be able to focus on my studies will be a good idea. The program is 22 months long, which I guess means about 20 months of rain and snow and 2 months of sun???!!!

I'm not expecting much out of Toledo itself, or is there anything to do there?

Louise LOL funny I guess I did give a weather report! :rotfl: :rotfl:

They have a nice downtown area but it is only active in the summer at night. There are concerts at different halls/places like that. There are some nice places to eat along the Maumee River downtown. There are some really nice parks around the metro area. Very nice if you like hiking. The burbs are nicer places to stay. The roads are kindy stinkey/poor repair. People are nice for the most part. Certain parts are okay to go in but others are not/same for most cities. They are not far from Lake Erie, Cedar Point Amusement Park in Sandusky. Hubby got his BSN from MCO. We both worked at St. Vincents in downtown Toledo.

I agree with the previous statements about Toledo's weather. I've lived here in Toledo for the last 8 years, and as we say in Ohio, "If you don't like the weather, wait 15 minutes and it will change." Tuesday we had 3 inches of snow on the ground and it was 28 degrees. It's warm, wet, and 50 today.

I work at MCO as an RN (MUO, if you like - got my BSN here as an undergrad), and I can tell you it is a good hospital. I don't know a lot about the GEMINI program other than what people have told me. From what I hear it is a difficult and challenging program, but what nursing program isn't? There will be a lot of excellent clinical opportunities here in town with three Level I trauma centers and a lot of regional hospitals nearby.

As for stuff to do in Toledo, it's what you make of it. It's true that there is a lot more to do in the summer - we have some awesome metroparks, and a lot of activities / festivals in the summer. There is stuff to do throught the year, however... A world-class art museum, COSI, Zoo, etc, etc. We have the highest number of restaurants per person in the entire country, so there will never be a shortage of places to eat, either.

Thanks Renerian and CCGMatt!

It helps to hear about the town. I know the program will be challenging, that's why I kind of like the idea of being in a simpler place to not have distsractions. Although great to know about the high restaurant per capita! I thought San Francisco was the highest. Are there any possibilities of healthy, organic food and/or markets? I tend to be more left-wing, alternative, independent, etc. How will that go over in Toledo?

In terms of restaurants for organic food - not a lot. Not my cup of tea, though, so I don't know a lot about that. I do know there are a couple of organic food markets though I don't know anything about their quality.

Toledo is a VERY big "D" town. Republicans like me find it hard to deal with at times!

I am not sure if the Erie Street Market/downtown Toledo has organic produce or not. Matt yes I forgot about the Art Museaum! I love the egyptian exhibit and it is one of the states largest collection so I hear.

I know there is a ton of places to eat in Toledo LOL.

Oh yeah I am a blue collar thinker/nurse/mom/and a big D LOL. I spent more years working as a non-nurse than nurse. I guess I took alot of that with me to the Columbus metro area and am really into watching the events with the auto/auto glass industry being from that area.

Toledo is a Democrat town? Wow, thanks, that helps a lot! (Sorry CGMatt--I can see how you'd be unhappy about that). So there seems to be no one out there who's applying or going to the school...???Anyone out there?

LOL sorry about your not being happy about Toledo being a D town. For the most part most people are nice.

Let us know what you decide. Hubby is interviewing for several positions in Toledo (Lourdes College as a professor) and some others across the U.S. so we may be going home.

Nope. Haven't heard yet. The deadline to apply was February 15th. They said they'll be doing interviews the first week in April, so I should hear by then. (Oh--and I'm glad it's a Democrat town, that was CGMatt who isn't). I'll let you know when I hear, thanks for thinking of me!
