help with insulin

  1. I am getting ready to start on a Med-Surg unit, and will be using Insulin for the first time in years. Can't remember which one is used IV. Can someone help?

    :kiss Thanks Youda, that was my thought, but just wanted to be sure. Will have to take a test soon.

    An order should specify the kind of insulin. But, just as a refresher, other kinds of insulin are metabolized differently and so are contraindicated IV, they have to be absorbed sub-q. I honestly don't know about the newer insulins where onset is faster than even Regular, maybe some of the others know if they are used IV ?????

    Amen. Regular is right. I am an L&D RN and we do insulin drips regularly. Regular is the only one that can be given IV. Was a Med/Surg RN for 10 years.
