Hi, I am in need of help. I am trying to find a medical surgical mission to china for 2011 and with all of the stuff online it is very nuts to try to figure out. I am a surgical RN and scrub/circulate/can 1st assist for all cases except hearts. If anyone could help me I would appreciate it very much. Thank you, Karl

Just curious...
I don't know anything about first assist nurses, but why is it that you can't work with hearts?
never been trained on them
They just omit that in the curriculum?

Imthatguy, cardiac surgery is considered an "ultra-specialty" if you will. When you are oriented to the OR, you do rotations through every service BUT this one. Only the nurses that have a desire to do ONLY cardiac surgery are trained to do it.
Karl, I don't know about medical mission trips to China. I do however know of some for Nicaragua and parts of Africa. Have you contacted MSF?

Karl-=--I will email you with information.
Karl--can't find your email. Go to www.imb.org. There should be a list of volunteer trips until the heading "going". China used to have a lot of requests. Let me know if you don't have any success.

Hello. Good for you that you are seeking medical surgical nursing work in China! Have you explored nursing work opportunities in Doctors Without Borders program? If you are associated with a religious group, you might try checking with the administrative folks there about international nursing work options. One of the nurses I knew did interesting nursing mission work in Honduras through her church. Have you asked some of the surgeons you work with about mission work possibilities? I just learned that my dentist does some great mission work in Africa. Best wishes!
