Well I will be graduating with my BSN in May, and I was wondering about MCCG. I have been offered a position there (was told to call at the end of April to do background check/drug screen) on the indigent floor (6 Main). I was very happy because this was the first position I had been offered so of course I thought I was sure to take it. Now I'm having second thoughts related to the news I am hearing. Several of my classmates are doing their practicum there and the hospital apparently has done some pay cuts (not on their base pay though). The nurse manager of the floor also told me in the interview that MCCG now is requiring an 18 month commitment from all new hires (not just new nurses) due to the high turnover rate. I don't know what to do. MCCG is a magnet status hospital but I don't know if I would like it. I especially hate that they are only orientating new nurses for 8 weeks now instead of 12. If anybody works there or has worked there please tell me how you loved it or hated it whichever may be the case.

You have stated all the issues with MCCG. If you cannot find another job, stick with them for at least a year, and then go somewhere else. Their solutions to retention only makes it worse.
@TickyRN do you happen to know any information on Coliseum Medical, is it worse or better than MCCG. I have heard the nurse/pt ratio is high, but they are offering 13 weeks of orientation. I just had an interview there on Wednesday, haven't heard back with an offer as of yet

In this economy it's hard to find a job if you're a new grad... And in order to move up or sideways on the ladder you have to have a year of experience... So, you could commit to work there and during those last 6 months look for other positions OR if you like it there you can stay on... You mentioned that they are magnet status so that means they had to have done something right... lol I have friends that work there (Ortho/Neuro, Surgical Trauma, & Cancer Center) They all seem to enjoy it. However, my friend on Ortho/Neuro said that they are a BUSY floor (Lots of admits & discharges).... So, I think it's making sure you're on a good unit. That turnover rate IS kind of high... Did you ask the manager why? Was it due to people moving up or people getting that one year of experience & moving on? When I was searching for a job, orientation was one of my deal breakers... If you weren't going to properly train me, then how could I possibly be a fully functioning nurse??? Those are just some things to consider when you make your decision....
Also, I had an interview with Coliseum awhile back with their Med/Surg Director... I was being interviewed for the Med/Surg Oncology & Med/Surg Orthopedics... She was nice and VERY upfront about the issues on all of her units (5-6pts to a nurse). Training seemed adequate(8-12 weeks). They said it would be hard work but, they would work hard to retain their staff members... If I had chosen to go that route, then at least I was very informed...
Luckily, something opened up in Public Health... I love patient teaching & autonomy so that was the best choice for me.
Good Luck in making your decision!!! I'm sure you'll make the right choice for you..
Thanks so much for your reply. I decided on the medical center. I don't know why the turnover rate is so high there but the person who interviewed me said it has one of the highest retention rates for nurses. My advisor works on the floor and he gave a good recommendation to the nurse manager which helped me secure the job. He was able to provide a lot of information on the floor I am going to be working. He also said the nurse manager gives extra weeks of orientation if new grads don't feel comfortable. Coliseum was good money wise but their nurses satisfaction was not too high. I also liked that the Med Center is a teaching hospital and the floor I am going to work is the "teaching floor". My advisor felt my personality was a good fit with the rest of the staff and so did the nurse manager. Even if it doesn't work out for that floor there are many opprotunities to explore since this is one of the largest hospitals in GA.
Great!!! That's good to hear! Good Luck!!!

Hello all! I was wondering from the time you all applied online, how long did it take for you to get a call for an interview? Receive an offer, and start? Did you call HR to follow up on your application, or did you have help (internal) getting the interview?
I am an out of state applicant and I will be in town in two weeks. Hoping to get a call for an interview during my trip down to Georgia.
