I have the opportunity next year to work as a student nurse intern for the summer at a local hospital and the choice of department I would like to work in. My question is to all you experienced nurses working on med surg, is the medical surgical unit a good unit to work in as an intern?

Absolutely! It's a great place to get a wide variety of experiences. You'll learn about a fair number of surgeries, diseases, and also lots of psych and family issues.

I worked as a student nurse intern between my 1st and 2nd year of nursing school. I think it was the best thing to do! I learned so much that summer, much more than I learned doing clinicals!! Also, when I applied for a job when I was graduating I then got the job on that floor because the manager liked the way I worked!! So I would go for it.
If med-surg is not available and I have to pick a different department what would you suggest?
Are there any areas you are particularly interested in? Otherwise, telemetry/cardiac units, oncology, or emergency department if they will take interns. Those would be departments where you'd see a fair amount of variety.
