MDE Columbia University 2021

Published

Hey ! I know im super early to make this thread for the MDE program at Columbia for the 2021 start year ? but I was wondering if there are any future nurses out there as eager as me to get started !!

@Zehra

Hey there!! That’s interesting that some schools aren’t taking portage. Do you mind sharing who isn’t?

That’s a tough decision, I want to tell you to just get them done at Portage ASAP but, if some schools aren’t even accepting courses from them that makes it tough. If you decide to wait to take those courses I would address that you are enrolled in those classes in the addendum or one of the essays in some way. Show proof that you’re enrolled. That seems like a lot but that’s how I would handle it. ?

Hi everyone, I am currently a senior at UCI applying to the 2021MPE cycle. I have a solid GPA (3.7) and work as a MA but I am worried that because I still have three prerequisites to do (anatomy IP) it will hurt my chances. I am also late to all of this as I just started my application a few weeks ago but I have all three recommenders in place and a lot of writing to do. Do you all sound like amazing candidates and are so inspiring I’m so glad I found this thread!

I am taking anatomy RN at a cc and plan to finish physiology by February and then Microbio by end of may. Should I take physiology and Microbio sooner on portage? Either way it won’t be done by October 15 ? and other schools won’t take portage

hey Zehra!

I was in a similar situation as you last year, I had to finish up Statistics, retake Lifespan Psychology and Anatomy. As I mentioned in another post, this actually counted against me to have this many classes in progress. One thing that the Columbia staff told me about last year was taking classes or testing out of a requirement (if its a retake) through Excelsior https://www.excelsior.edu/. Check if the other schools you are applying are OK with classes from there? I would recommend you take Physio and micro sooner. The end date for Micro is very close to this program's start date should you get accepted. Columbia tends to start their semester in late May/Early June., Columbia is also okay with classes being in progress, they do not need to be finished by the application deadline. We get an email in January to update our grades from the semester we are currently on. If you aren't able to, I'd also encourage you to write about it in the addendum portion.

@ZMOtero hey girl! Are you saying that Retaking courses counted against you and they would have rather you just tested out?

No, what I was trying to say is that having too many classes in progress right before the start of the program counted against me. I had 3 core requirements (Statistics, Retaking Anatomy, and Retaking Lifespan Psych) that I was taking during the Spring semester before the start of the program. I think it was just too much before starting a program like theirs. I did not get the sense that retakes counted against me, they (Columbia) were actually giving me resources were to retake these classes.

hope this clarifies it a bit ❤️

@ZMOtero

Phew! I got scared for a second haha!

Hey! I know some schools in California don't accept courses from Portage, like USD. I would suggest taking physio and anatomy at the same school because I think some schools offer anatomy and physio separately and some do AP1 and AP 2...

I completely agree with @ZMOtero on the prereqs. I applied last cycle and was waitlisted because I was missing one prereq and my prereqs were the only true sciences I had taken. If you have a strong science background and are not going to be done with your prereqs in time then that’s okay. But if you have no science background please try to get those prereqs in esp the science ones. I used portage and soon all their classes will be recorded, which is added stress, but it is what is it. Excelsior is a good option too to test out but I know a lot of other programs don’t take excelsior, if your applying to others. Good luck to everyone!
to my earlier comment about hearing back on decisions, I made an error I heard back January 25th last year.

I have a question! So Columbia starts May/June but I'm in school right now and I graduate June 11th officially. Can I still apply? I was planning on taking finals early and going to Columbia when classes start but would that qualify me to apply as a 2nd degree? Thank you!!

I am from Phoenix too!

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if you open the link to complete the timed writing and video interview that you had to do both in one sitting. Or can I open the link and just do the timed writing and then do the video essay at another time.

Hi ! And you can do the timed writing portion first then exit out and do the video a later time. Thats what I did but didn’t do the video interview yet LOL. But you don’t have to do it in one sitting.

If you take them on portage now, you could actually be done with them by October 15th if you have time to get it done. They’re typically only 7 modules and do not take long at all to finish. Even if you don’t get them done by October 15th you’ll definitely get them done before the year is out. Because you can update  admissions about your preqs and let them know you finished them. But yes I know other schools don’t take portage. So you can either take them at cc if you’re applying else where as well or portage if you’re aiming high towards columbia, which I did

If you can guarantee that you will be able to take finals early and get to attend Columbia on time then you can let admissions know whats going on and still apply ! And yes I believe we would have to put 2nd degree, not too sure. Columbia is having a financial aid info session soon where they talk about all that stuff

Thank you! I emailed them and I was told:

"Would you be able to confirm when your last day of Spring 2021 courses will end?"

Do you know if there's a specific document I should be looking for? What can I do to confirm?
