Hey ! I know im super early to make this thread for the MDE program at Columbia for the 2021 start year ? but I was wondering if there are any future nurses out there as eager as me to get started !!

Hi ! So what I was told by admissions is that, the optional essay is optional. Thats where you write about anything that isn’t academically related since that would be stated in the addendum. You can write anything about yourself that hasn’t been stated already in anything that you provided in the personal statement, resume, etc. So it is strictly optional. And for the communication, yes I just posted screenshots of the emails. Hope this helped !

Thanks for your response! I guess what I am asking regarding the optional essay is that if I choose to write it, what would I write? So for example, it can't be about my volunteer experience right, just personal stuff?

If it’s academically related, then no. Anything that you want the admissions committee to know about you, that isn’t already stated, and not academically related is what you would write about. Thats why it’s optional I guess for people that need more space to write about things they would like to put into their application. ??♀️

okay thanks for your help!
Ugh I feel so upset ?. I took a few courses on portage and one of them I ended up getting a C because I didn’t do the greatest on the final ??♀️. I retook it with a cheap discount they offered me and passed it with a higher grade. However my transcript will show the C grade plus the retake course grade. I feel like this just lowered my chances completely from even getting into columbia ?.
@queen3lizabeth I honestly would not even sweat it girl. (Easier said than done, I know) You came back, retook it, and passed it. Honestly, if anything, it just shows that you have gone through the material a couple of times and will be well versed in that subject. Looking at the bigger picture once you do get in you will know the material even better having taken it twice. You still got this.

This made me feel a little better. However im just having doubts I don’t want columbia to think I can’t handle these classes or something that I had to retake it when it I literally only two points away from a B the first time ??♀️

Which course is it? I am also taking them at Portage.
I think you can use the addendum to address that C and show them that you have improved. Again, they take a holistic approach and grade isn't everything

It was for A&P II. That course is a little more difficult than A&P I. But still...it felt like a slap in the face ??♀️. I’ll definitely use the addendum to address that as well. Hopefully it doesn’t affect my application.
I am not sure how Portage works or what it is but maybe if you have proof of the new grade or explain what happened in a word doc on the optional essay/addendum. Either way, I hope it works out for you feel the happiness and success you deserve for putting in all this work for your applications and career!

Hey I’m from last application cycle just FYI you guys won’t be hearing back until EARLIEST February 2021. We didn’t hear anything AT ALL as in complete SILENCE from (when I personally applied) which was September 30. (They opened the app early last year for people that attended an open house.)
it’s extremely nerve wracking but that’s how they do it !
