I answered my own question with the mail I got today. We don't have to wear scrubs until week 2 of 1530.

I have to get there to get the syllabus and books SOON. Its hard to get there when I work full time and the one time I did go was a Friday and of course the bookstore was closed.

Hahaha, MCC nursing students are the best!!! Just reading these boards take me back and make me short of breath. Seriously I wish you all well, I graduated back in Oct. 2006 (IT CAN BE DONE). The instructors demand a lot, but are eagar to teach to those who put forth the effort. Take care of one and other, you'll need each other.

A couple of recommendations:

  • Find a like-minded study buddy if you haven't already :smiley_ab
  • Tape record your lectures (I wish someone told me this from day one). Then rewrite your notes.
  • Stick with a small group for study sessions: 2-3 ppl. My study buddy and I would burn the midnight oil studying over the phone. Helped save me from failing.
  • PDAs helped me immensely through RN school but I never use mine now that I'm a nurse.
  • Learn how to do care plans from the get go...channel Carpenito. :) Care plans are tedious but do have a purpose, they will help you to learn how to critically think. Don't think of them as horrible or else you will actually die :chuckle
  • If you have test anxiety, start getting over it...they never stop hitting you with tests. :banghead: Take them in stride, and know they are NOT indicative of how smart you are!
  • Don't just memorize. Visualize. If you know and can picture how each body system works normally verbatem, you'll be able to figure out what will happen if something is pathologically wrong. (i.e. if you understand how the heart works normally, you'll be able to visualize when there is something like mitral valve regurgitation goin on, and know what assessment findings you will need to find (lung sounds, heart sounds, pulse ox, objective and subjective data), what treatments you'll be giving). It will stick with you better than just straight up memorization....trust me!!!!!!!!! THIS IS KEY: KNOW THE NORMAL FUNCTION BEFORE YOUR LECTURES...seriously, study like you need to know it for test and you'll totally understand the lectures and it will save you time later.
  • Get to know your instructors...they're awesome. If you're a go-getter, or was shy like me :imbar, get involved with your MCCSNA...it will help you with job opportunities and will help stuff your resume for when you need a job. (It's getting tougher out there). It helped me get where I am today.
  • Ask for a reference after most clinical rotations. It again, helps with getting a job, either as a Nurse Assistant and eventually Tech.

If you ever have any questions, just ask. These are just some tips that helped me through nursing school. Great memories but it sure as hell was a lot of work. I really think Macomb churns out the best nurses. When it comes to nursing, MCC gets it...pretty much have a 100% pass rate on the NCLEX. Soon your faces will be up on the wall of fame upstairs . Best of luck!!!!!

Wondering if anyone else applied for that Michigan Nurse's Scholarship? And has anyone heard anything regarding it? I didn't get a thing from the Federal Financial Aid. :( Would be nice to get anything at all!!

I have no idea but I am sick of waiting so I am just charging it and hoping they give me the rest as a refund or something.

I'm an October start, and I'm getting really excited for all of you starting soon! So, how did you get this syllabus? Did you get a letter in the mail or something? I'm hoping mine comes soon so I can pick it up. I am getting my books now. I'm in the NWLB program and they only keep your bookstore account open so long... they told me that I should go now and get the things I need.

Also, August start people... I remember them saying we would get a letter detailing on when and what to get our health screens done, the CPR, etc... how long did you have to wait to get that letter? About how long before you start school did it come. I'm getting excited and anxious! LOL. Thanks!

Good luck August Start!!!!!!!!

Gee...I don't even remember what came when but I just got a letter last week saying that I could come and pick up the syllabi for the classes. The syllabus for 1530 was in the letter. I am ready except for finishing the ACE passport test although I have done something similar I think when I applied to Beaumont's Rad Tech program. It certainly sounds like the same modules.

This is what to read for the first week of classes:

1510

Practice of Nursing Taylor Ch 1

Legal Aspects of Nursing Practice Taylor Ch 7

Gerontological Nursing Taylor Ch 20

1520

Review syllabus

Read Wilson Ch 1 and skim Ch 19

Taylor pp 83-7, 505-527, 221-3

1530

Read Taylor's Clinical Skills Ch 4 Asepsis and Ch 9 Activity

Read Taylor's Fundamentals Ch 27 Asepsis and Ch 39 Activity

View Modules 2 Asepsis and 9 Activity

Hiya Nell!

Thank you for your answer! It does help A LOT! I am just trying to figure out things while I'm laid off for a bit. I go back to work for a month starting Sept. 14th... so I wish I could know this stuff now so I can get ready for my October start. That is quite a start for the first week, but I'm sure we will be running on adrenaline by being excited to start.

Hey Gem I went to the bookstore today and it was the first day you could use financial aid for books BUT I got totally screwed over because since I registered for late start classes the funds will not be available to me until October. They said I could print out the book list (the computer for this had a huge line) and take it to financial aid (also a huge line) and apply for a "book advance". This all took an hour for them to tell me after I waited in line to print my schedule (which u also need for them to tell you that you have no funds currently available). So anyway there are no used books left anyway so my grand total for the 1500 books (I even forgot to Mosby's dictionary) was 800 DOLLARS! I am going to try to find them cheaper online and return the ones I find.

I left very upset and with 4 bags of books. I would have gone to get used books weeks ago if I had known I wouldnt be able to use my financial aid. I had to charge it all.

CorazondeOro....

Did you try the Bookmark on Garfield to see if they had any used Nursing Books? They are a "tad" cheaper. But, I can imagine that with a day like you had you wouldn't want to see another book! I went in to get the costs of the 1500 books the other day (Because that is all I get so far b/c I start in Oct.) I was imagining me with a large wheel barrow taking my books out to my car. $800!!!! OMG!!!!!!!

Oh... and I have a Border's Book store card. I had a 40% off coupon a few months ago. I got the Mosby's Dictonary then. It was around $40 and then I got $16.00 off. Border's/Barnes and Nobel etc... tend to have some of the "supporting" books like that you might need. Keep your eyes out for coupons or see if there is a friend that may be getting coupons. I'd offer you one, but I haven't seen any since then.

Yeah the plan was to go to Bookmark but after an hour at MCC I was already late for work and didn't want to look at another book. I am going to go return a couple books that I can get from other people or online for cheaper so I will go to Bookmark for sure.

My stack was so huge that I had to move my car and park illegally so that someone could help me take it all out to my car. Thanks for the Borders idea, I might be able to find a coupon. I never thought of that!
