Mayo Clinic Rochester New Grad Residency Spring/February 2022

Published

Hey everyone! I just wanted to start this thread because I haven't seen any threads yet for Rochester residency starting in February! Was wondering if there is anyone yet that has been offered a position, what unit etc. Also wondering what everyone is doing for housing, you are relocating and where from, etc! Feel free to introduce yourself!!

Hey everyone! I'm the creator of the topic but thought I'd share in the comments! I was a Summer III this past Summer and applied to Transplant ICU and was offered a position! I'll be relocating from Nashville, TN and my start date is Feb 12th!

Hi! Thanks for starting this thread:) I interviewed this week with the HVT (heart/vascular/thoracic) ICU and was offered a position! I’m originally from Michigan but would be relocating from Atlanta, GA if I accept the offer.

Nice!! Congrats! One of my friends worked on that unit during our internship and loved it! Where else have you applied?

Thanks! And it's good to hear that your friend liked it, I’ve been applying for mostly CVICU positions so I’m not super sure about the HVT ICU but that makes me feel better! I also have CVICU offers from Duke and Cleveland Clinic but I feel like I can’t pass up an offer from Mayo!

I went and visited Mayo Clinic last weekend. I’m still trying to decide what to do because I have offers from Mayo Clinic, Duke, Johns Hopkins, UNC. All CTICU and STICU. I’m just not so sure about moving from NC to MN.

Does anyone else have CRNA school as their end game goal? Duke CRNA program is #3 in the nation, Johns Hopkins ranks next in continuing nursing education degrees. I was kinda disappointed to see where Mayo Clinic fell on this list. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? I would really appreciate it.

I’m planning on eventually doing CRNA as well! What did you think of Mayo when you visited? My plan was to start out at Mayo and then try to go to Duke for CRNA school to escape the winters...but starting at Duke and doing CRNA at Duke might be the way to go. Although, Mayo’s base pay is looking really attractive compared to Duke’s $27! Do you know anything regarding the residencies at Duke vs Mayo, pros/cons of each?

I have Vanderbilt right next to me here in Tennessee. I turned down an offer in their ED and MICU to go to Mayo, as well as MICU at Cleveland Clinic. I worked at Mayo this Summer for their internship program and I can tell you it was AMAZING! I also did a Summer internship at Duke in nursing too and I can tell you there is a significant culture difference and I highly prefer Mayo. There is also a large pay difference between all of these hospitals and Mayo! If you start at Mayo you can punch your ticket to go anywhere after! My current plan is to start at Mayo in Rochester, transfer to Mayo in Florida and do an AGACNP program and work inpatient critical care!

Thanks for the insight! Were you at Mayo St. Mary’s for the internship? If so, what was it like on the units? I won’t be able to visit before accepting if thats what I decide and couldn’t find much on Google images LOL. Also what differences did you notice between Duke and Mayo regarding the cultures?

I worked both at Methodist and Saint Mary’s. Saint Mary’s is very new and updated. Their ICU’s are beautiful with very high tech equipment. Everything is state of the art. My ICU is the only ICU at Methodist and isn’t as updated as Saint Mary’s but it’s still an amazing ICU and very high functioning. Ratios are very very safe and manageable and I’ll say it a thousand times, Mayo takes care of their nurses! As far as the differences between Duke and Mayo, they biggest differences I noticed was education and value. Mayo places a whole new meaning on education. EVERYTHING is a collaboration, and everyone is willing to help you out and to help you learn. They also value their nurses more than any hospital I have ever been to in my life. They take care of their nurses. At Duke, I felt a little bit more like a number and my internship program there was a lot more focused on me just being a tech for them rather than actually learning things. Overall, I just felt a lot more comfortable as a new grad and as a student in general at Mayo and felt more valued as a whole!

Another thing I’d like to mention is that at Mayo, they have teams for everything. They have IV teams, they have blood nurses, etc. So there is a lot of stress taken off of nurses that other institutions may have!

Hi! So excited to find this thread! I recently accepted a position in the medical ICU. Random question, do you guys know what the color scrubs the RNs wear?
