I am curious, are there any hospitals there that have a weekend option? I have only worked ER and have been there for 5+ years now. I will be finishing my BSN (I'm a diploma RN). The weekend rate here is $29.50 (plus night $4, plus weekend $8). Can I dream of a job that will pay anything close to that, working off shifts still.
I've read through the last post about Virginia Beach nurses and was a little bit disappointed at the pay rate listed. The cost of living in Hampton Roads area has to be more than there than here (5bed/3.5br 4000+ soft. homes with good schools $250K). The starting pay for a new grad here is now $22.

Hi, Im an RN in VA Beach. I agree that the pay rate here is quite low. There is a large military population here so people are transient. Sentara Healthcare is the biggest game in Hampton Roads and the pay is not competitive. The night shift pays $4/hr and I think weekend diff is $1(?). There are other hospitals in the area, but the only one I would even consider is Chesapeake General. They pay more, it's in a nice area and I know a few RN's that work there and are pretty happy. I would look into those two.
You most definitely will not find a 4000sqft house here for $250K. Real estate is not cheap here by any means. The area I'm renting a house in has very good schools but I would say the houses here start over $300K.
You may want to check out Richmond and the surrounding areas, pay is better north of here. Richmond may have 'appropriate cost of living' . Williamsburg/Yorktown/Jamestown are all Beautiful and very expensive.
Hope this helps.

Another option is to consider living across the border in NC and commuting to VA for work. Houses there are somewhat (not much) cheaper and you can get more bang for your buck, and commuting is only about 20-30 minutes to most parts of Hampton Roads. And since both VA and NC are compact states, you could work in VA if you held a NC license.
Don't know what the job market is like in NE NC though.
