May not finish last year of school?

Published

Mostly due to financial reasons. So far, my grades have been excellent. However, I have been in school for 4 years already and have used up my $8000/yr scholarship for the fifth year. The remaining funding is barely going to cover tuition and fees. I thought I could take out a small private loan to cover the rest, but I unfortunately discovered that my credit is bad, way bad (

I am super ****** because thanks to her bad decisions, my graduation, which has already been delayed 1 yr because of the stupid 3 yr nursing program, will be prolonged even more. I can't even get approved for a $3000 loan its that bad. If my balance is too high for a semester, my school will not let me register and I won't be able to finish. I feel really crummy right now and have no idea what to do. I could try to find a job (besides my student worker job), but who knows how long that'll take and to save up $9000. Has anyone ever even left nursing school and picked up where they left off? I see it in other majors. I just want to finish so I can move on with my life, but instead I'm really stressed right now. I'm entering adulthood with s**ty credit and thus will hardly be able to attain anything for myself. Loads of emotions going through me right now.

Wow, no I haven't been in that position but I just wanted to say how sorry I am for what you're going through. I almost had to miss my spring semester because of that and it would have put me one semester behind and in a different class but thankfully someone lent me the money. I hope you can figure out something because that would be so hard to have to stop at this point.

You need a hug.

It's terrible what you are going through, especially knowing you have a year left and mom's bad habit caught up to you. Have you spoken to someone in Financial Aid regarding your situation? I remember when I was getting my first degree, I sent a email to Financial Aid about how I was struggling as an out-of-state student paying my high tuition. Due to that "heart-felt" email, they awarded me a couple thousand dollars extra. It wasn't alot, but it helped in paying for my books.

Is there a co-signer, besides your mom that could help? In the meantime, try looking for a job. This is an obstacle you can overcome.

These are good ideas. Some states will allow BSN students who have completed a certain number of credits to sit for NCLEX-PN. If your state permits this, you could work as a practical nurse for a while, at least until you get some money saved up.

I'm so sorry this happened to you and I'm very disappointed that a mom would do this to her child.

What about student loans through the government. These aren't based off of credit scores??

That is terrible what your mom did. My Bio mom did similar things when we were growing up and my sister had to deal with some of the backlash from it. It just boggles my mind when parents can do these things to their children. Very sorry.

Can you talk to your school? My school has a form for students with extreme circumstances such as yours that they take into consideration for financial aide. I bet even talking to them might be helpful, bring records, forms, etc to back yourself up.

I would see if your school has retention counselors. I had some financial trouble a few semesters ago and talk to the retention office at my school and they really helped me out. I'm really sorry, I hope you can work it out.

See a financial aid counselor about a subsidized (or unsubsidized) stafford loan. That's the most logical thing to do.

I already have taken out Stafford Sub and Unsub loans. Financial services told me I could have my mom apply for a federal parent loan, which I know she will be denied, and they will use that money that was denied to use as additional loan money for me as a Stafford loan.

However, I just thought of another plan, although it may delay my graduation by a semester. I think I have enough funding to get through the summer and fall semesters. If I can take the spring semester off and instead take those classes with the financial aide from the 2012-2013 school year in the summer semester of 2012, which would be cheaper anyway, I would probably have less to come out of pocket and probably less loans. This is assuming I pass all 5 classes from now until then and will not have repeat them, which will, of course, push me back. I will bring this up to financial services and see what they say. Maybe that will work? It won't help my credit situation, but it will allow me to avoid taking out private loans and minimize my loan debt by $4000 maybe. I could also use that spring semester to work some more, get together my graduate portfolio, and study for NCLEX and any remedial HESI, if needed.

This is going to sound really ugly ... but ...

Have you talked to your school financial aid office about any other possibilities that might open up if you file a police report against your mother? Technically, you might be the victim of a crime (identity theft when your mother used your credit) and that might open up other options.

Just a thought ... not a pretty one ... but what your mother did was REALLY wrong and you are a victim of her mis-deeds. You might be able to get some additional help as a crime victim.

At least ... have you completely cut off your mother's access to your credit line? If not, you need to do that RIGHT AWAY or she will keep your financially ruined forever. You need to deal with your mom -- both financially and emotionally -- and I wish you the best of luck in doing that and moving on with your life.

I was going to say what she did was illegal but I was to afraid to say it, so Kudos to you for putting it out there. It would definitely be a crime of some sort for her mom to use her credit cards without her permission. It sounds like she opened them up under her moms advice, but then her mom went and maxed them all out without her knowing. It is so messed up for parents to take advantage of their children like this and it's so hard for the kids because we don't want to get our parents in trouble. Very ugly situation.

$9,000 a year for 5 years? *** my RN cost $4,000 plus books Total. I say if you're spending $50,000 for an RN thats a bit too much.

I could fund my entire school by selling off 1 amp and 2 guitars if I needed to.
