Maternity teaching project (3rd year nursing student)

Published

I have to do a term paper about a teaching project in which i pick a patient, teach her the topic of my choice, and then evaluate her knowledge on the topic after i've taught her. I have to teach in my rotation right now which is maternity and my goals have to relate to the healthy people 2020 goals. I chose to do the goal "reduce cesarean births among low-risk women with prior cesarean birth." I have all the information I need but I was wondering if anybody has any creative ideas on how i can teach the mother this... i was thinking a pre-quiz or poll on her c-section experience and her views on lady partsl delivery... then after teaching her the positives of lady partsl delivery, see if her opinions have changed. I'm lost! any suggestions would be amazing :)

Specializes in labor and delivery.

Just a thought but it might be easier to pick a goal like educating moms on the benefits of putting their babies in their backs to sleep or on the education of moms on the benefits of breast feeding.

Specializes in HH, Peds, Rehab, Clinical.

Your assignment sounds a lot like our Grand Rounds portion! A lot of us did quizzes at the end (we presented to our clinical groups as though they were our target audience) It was all about educate, educate, educate.

My personal thought is that this MIGHT be a pretty difficult topic to tackle (but kudos to you for taking it on!). I'd have stuck with something safer like breastfeeding, LOL!

I think prior c/s Mom's fall into 1 of 2 camps with little interest in jumping sides: VBAC at practically any cost is at all possible and those that think sign me up, schedule me, tell me when to be there! (My own personal experience only, no flames please, LOL!!!!!)

GL with your assignment!

When I did my teaching project, they encouraged us to pick a very simple topic. I did my topic on breast feeding tips, but other students picked changing a diaper, circ care, bottle feeding, etc. You would be surprised how much information you can teach and how much you can write about such a simple project. My vote goes to picking an easier topic and saving yourself all the work!! With breast feeding it was easy to test understanding - simply have the mom breast feed her baby! :)

Specializes in Cardiac Care.

With this topic its more like teaching the doctor about it than the patient.

Specializes in L&D/Maternity nursing.

I agree. Not only that, but the choice to have a lady partsl birth after cesarean is not always up to the woman....its often dictated by her MD and hospital policy. Some are just not willing to take that risk, thus taking away the option to VBAC from women. I love your topic, and I think its extremely important for women to be properly educated about the pros/cons with subsequent cesareans and the pros/cons for trying for a VBAC (if it is a viable option for her...meaning she has a MD/CNM and a hospital that allows for this), your topic is extremely ambitious and isnt as easy as just giving them a quick info sheet and/or a quiz or poll. This is a hot hot topic in L&D and one where you might find some resistance in implementing your project.
