Masters in infectious diseases vs public health?

Hi,

I've been looking into the London school of hygiene and tropical medicine. I'm Canadian and studied in Canada for my RN :). I was comparing the Masters in public health vs their masters in infectious disease. Both programs are fully distance online based. It's affiliated with the university of London.

Was wondering if anyone knows anything about this school. Both degrees sound interesting...The only thing I'm worried about the infectious disease masters is that it's so "specific" - do you think the public health one would be a better choice overall as far as being more broadly "accepted"?

All the courses just seem so fascinating though.

I've been working in psych for 5 years since graduating from nursing school. Haven been looking into masters programs but I don't have much interest in a regular "nursing" masters, seems sortof dry from what I've read and what some friends have told me from their masters in nursing.

I know I don't work in public health right now, but the Masters programs interest me. Just hard to choose between both. I'm more interested for general knowledge and learning but would be open to maybe going into PH one day. I'd love to do a medical missions volunteer trip one day too down the road

Hi RN2B123,Sorry for responding so late, I just saw your post, and I hope you will still come back to check:yes:I have similar interests, and have researched a lot of programs around the world in the last few years! LSHTM is a world class and well recognized institution! I have considered it, even started to apply before, but never completed the application for the Global Health Policy program. However, my desire is to go delve deep into the academics, and want to use Anthropological research methods. So I opted for a Masters in Medical Anthropology (USA), and hope to study Global Health for my PhD. I am also in the same boat- I have no desire to do my grad education in Nursing, but I should add there are a few great programs that have double majors in Nursing and Public Health, if everything else fits in. Between Infectious Diseases and PH, I would go for PH because it leaves more doors open for you, as you have pointed out, I.D. limits you to just that! I do not know how to write a private message on this site, but you are welcome to inbox me for further discussion on this subject, and any other options...

I don't have a strong opinion on either program, but I agree with nabs88: LSHTM is an amazing school and very well-regarded. I have a few former classmates who went there and absolutely loved it. As they've got (one of) the top tropical medicine programme(s) in the world, I would expect their infectious disease program especially to focus on diseases of the "developing world".

Are you dead set on doing a Masters? I know many nurses do the short course in tropical nursing at LSHTM or LSTM (Liverpool) and then eventually go on to do medical work with MSF or other organizations.
