Not making it in Massachusetts

I have been an RN for over fifteen years and have been looking for a job since the beginning of the year.

I have always been able to find work except this time around. I have excellent references and plenty of hospital

experience with Tele, wound care and IV insertion to name a few.

So why can't I find a job? Are hospitals required to hire a certain percentage of foreigners from other countries? They seem to have no problem finding employment. A friend of mine from Africa with less experience than me found a job without batting an eye. Am I too "seasoned?"

I might have to go out of state for a job!

I have been in this situation since '08. I only have 6 years myself. New Grads are definitely having a hard time as well. I don't know how to get in either. I can get into a place that has a bad Medicare rating, poor management, and risk my license. I can't even get a job in a decent nursing home!

I was told that I must stink by other nurses a couple of times when I asked on here a few years ago, lmao! So I know that isn't the reason. :lol2:

Here are some things I have read about on here, newspapers, Internet, etc:

Economy

No nursing shortage

Hospitals have no money to hire

Health care cuts

Some people blame Obama, but when I moved back here from Travel nursing Obama was not in office yet. :smokin:

All the retirees went back to work after their husbands were laid off from work.

Or nurses had to pick up more shifts because their husbands were laid off from work.

The nurses were going to go on strike at two hospitals here. One of the reasons low stafffing and madatry overrtime. =/ Not sure where they are going to get the staffing? Hire some people maybe? Or, can you tell us why there is no staffing?

There are plenty of other places that will hire you in other states. They are even willing to hire me. I just keep procrastinating to leave. Last time I did, I became home sick. :crying2:

Good luck to you and you are not too seasoned, there is something going on here and there seem to be no clear cut answers.

I also just heard that some of the nurses that were laid off in town

are also unable to find work and some are moving out of state for work.

Oh yeah I didn't even mention those. I only heard about them when Mass General did some lay offs and it was is the newspaper.

Besides the sunny states are definately hiring. Hey maybe no snow for you! :yeah:

I just noticed something, that the paper was filled with one half a page of jobs.

I don't live in Boston though, not sure how the papers are out there. This is not so good for anyone in the workforce.

Well, I guess it's who you know at this point. I was told by a friend that I could have a job at her place next month when the person in that position leaves! Thanks everyone. For others in this position, keep networking wherever you go.

With 15 y of experience you might be too 'expensive' , RN with only a couple of years experience are just cheaper.

Agree. After a certain point, your "years of experience" are your enemy.

I agree with the "too expensive" theory. Steward has several new grad positions posted on their site. I think they are all for Good Sam in Brockton. MGH was hiring new grads for their periop program. It is sad because of safety issues for patients.

They are hiring for many of their Critical Care programs too. It seems to be the new trend these days with many hospitals. Oh voy! :down:

It also depends on the degree you have ADN vs. BSN... generally city hospitals will only hire those at a Bachelor's level...
