Salaries in Howard County and surrounding area ?

U.S.A. Maryland

Published

I am currently employed in nursing education in a rural area where there are limited opportunities for nurses. I love my job, but I have the opportunity to move to Maryland to look for work. Here's my question: are salaries sufficiently higher in Maryland to make this move worthwhile?

To put my question in perspective, consider that I have a doctorate and I am making less than $50,000/year where I am now. I have a fair idea of cost of living, as I have a place in Maryland and visit often, but no real feel for nursing salaries.

I am a Diploma Grad, BA, MPA working float 24 hours a week and make about 55k. It works for me. I also do several other PRN positions. If I were FT I'd be in the 72-73k range. I also get benefits, working in Baltimore City. Not sure about Howard County. I drive 15 miles and 45 min to work, but much better than other area places I've worked in my 26 years in Maryland. You need to shop around. If you want to teach at a University I would plan on a much lower salary, however, I don't know details. Hospital educators are salaried, so make somewhat less than staff nurses. Good Luck.....Where are you living now????

I'd just as soon not identify where I work now...I'd rather not let colleagues know how dissatisfied I am, but it is an adjoining state. I like my location, and feel a real commitment to the work I do, but I am not making enough! Even my students are making more!

But thanks for the info.

I just accepted a new grad position at Northwest Hospital in Balitmore County and the new grad rate is 24.88 with an amazing shift differential for night shift.
