Current 2014 new grad pay for Maryland hospitals

U.S.A. Maryland

I have seen old threads with new grad pay in many states, but I can't seem to find a thread with recent hospital pay for new grads in MD. If any MD nurse can list thei hospitals new grad pay, with differentials and any other helpful information for new grads! Thanks in advance.

I don't believe Hopkins to be one of the lowest paying. I was recently hired and it was explained that the main campus goes off a yearly salary versus an hourly amount. In my offer letter I was given a base rate of $57,767 which roughly works out to $30+ an hour. This is for nights and from what I've heard it includes your shift differential and holiday pay in that quote so that doesn't show up on top of this amount. That's way more than my friends at Medstar hospitals start off making! Hopefully this helps :)

I'm glad to hear that you enjoy Johns Hopkins. However, I disagree that any nurse working on a salary would ever make more money than an hourly employee. I began my nursing career with MedStar and easily made more than $57K a year, and that was 10 years ago. Salary does not account for all of the extra time a nurse puts in. In addition, one has to pay to park at JHH. Ten years ago it was $55 a month, I can only imagine what it is now. I don't know why JHH would put their nurses on salary. My only guess is that because in the long run it saves them money and nurses are capped at a certain earning amount.

You are correct the parking is atrocious but nights are free in the garages so that's a plus for nights! And just because it's salary doesn't mean we are capped and don't get paid overtime. I'm not really sure why they do it but since I have nothing to compare it to I don't mind a bit 😄

I was going to share similar thoughts yesterday but got swept away by the vaccination threads. My present base pay is just under $25 as a new hire, but I work nights, so I rarely make that little. With differential, I make $28-30 per hour. Time and a half on holiday evenings means $40-45. Overtime comes with time and a half plus bonus of $100-150 per shift. Since a typical shift is rarely 12 hours and I love weekend differential, without any extra shifts or holidays, I'll usually make $1,000 before taxes per week. Monthly staff meetings, random holidays, education things.... It's very similar to the salary noted for JH.

So, you are paid on salary but you are able to make above said salary?! I am officially confused! Now I really do not understand why JHH uses that model! lol Admittedly, I do not know much about it, or how JHH pays, other than what I have heard from other nurses. I will also admit that I am quite jaded with nursing in Maryland and I actually no longer practice there (PA has been wonderful!). However, it is nice to hear something positive about nursing at JHH, as most people I know who do or have worked there don't much like it. Regardless, good luck with everything! :)

Omg, Excuse if I missed something. ....Is this RN pay... Cause if it is. I'm in Huge trouble. . Cause I Get Paid That Now As A LPN. Wow.

Lol. It seems like the only way to make over 30 per hr is to do float pool or per diem or agency. And those all require at least one year usually two years of experience. Many nurses are leaving the Icu I work on floor as staff RNs to other positions in the hospital that pay more. Yes they may have to work on any unit as a float nurse but the $10-15 more per hour is worth it to them.

Hopkins bayview is 24/hr... Not 26-28 like previous person suggested. I have two friends that just started there as new grads.

I think they were referring to JHH East Baltimore Campus and not JH Bayview Campus...b/c I'm positive that JHH starts new grad nurses at about $27/hr right now.

Hello all! Il be interviewing at JHH next week for Nelson 7 and olser 5 units. I'm SUPER nervous since this is my first real nurse interview. Does anyone have any advice or info on those floors ??? :x3:

Just found out Holy Cross new grads start just shy of $28.00/hr, + weekend and night differentials in which I cannot remember at the time.

Anyone know about Montgomery general?

I believe that the JHH salary varies depending where you work. I started at JHH main hospital this past fall. Offer letter starting salary was $60K or about 28.93 per hour. This accounts for shift differential (I am rotating between nights and days), holiday, and meetings. We pick up overtime if we want. Overtime is time and half so about $44 per hour. They also offer high needs which is $58-$70 per hour depending on the shift. High needs are just overtime shift were Hopkins is willing to pay more if nurses pick it up. I pick it up from time to time and one shift adds about $550 more to check after taxes. I know new grads who pick up plenty of high needs and overtime and will make more than $70k by the end of the year. I believe Hopkins pay is pretty competitive, generally you can find shifts to pick up if you need. My opinion
