Maryland BON Monitoring program

Hi everyone, I am very new to this and might have to sign up for Maryland BON monitoring program. Did anyone hear anything about it?

I have friends who have done it. Monthly random monitoring, call in daily, like normal. Board is pretty nice, in general. Five year contract. Be thankful you are not Pennsylvania.

Is there any chance in getting it reduced from five years? Do they make your employers send in quarterly reports?

Do they put restrictions on all licences, or is that a case by case thing?

This not Maryland specific, but you may not get a Maryland program participant to answer. I am super near Maryland. My program is five years...No one gets less. Your employer will have to send in reports...my state has monthly reports,other states do quarterly...can't speak to Maryland.

As to restrictions, if you are in a monitoring program, they aren't "on your license" per se...meaning, you do have restrictions that the program sets that you have to abide by. They will terminate your contract and send you back to the Board for discipline if you break them or refuse to abide by them. Those are a bit individualized. If you are in the program for a drug or alcohol event or issue, you will probably have a controlled substance restriction for 6 months to a year...then it goes away. Sometimes they say no night shift. Some say no ER, ICU, PACU, or home health for a length of time. Some don't. Most say that you have to have another RN available to monitor you at the job, usually a supervisor. Most say no alcohol consumption for the entire contract.

But that is individualized a bit. I've heard of a rare person not having the controlled substance restriction, but those typically don't involve a drug or alcohol event/issue. So if you were in for mental or physical health, kind of thing. A few have been able to work nights. Everybody has some kind of restriction but not everyone gets the book thrown at them.

I was given every restriction possible to work off.

Yes, quarterly reports. Knew one nurse who went in, called what she did sin, never missed a call, clean the whole time. They made it four and a half years instead of five.

Just posting this for anyone else that may have to deal with the Maryland Safe Practice Committee for a DWI. I meet with the council and somehow someway didn't get picked for the program! Before I went to court for my original offense I did some drug/alcohol classes and got an assessment. My assessment said I didn't have an addiction problem so I think thats what saved me.

Good luck everyone else that has to go through this. The thought of possibly losing my job, changing my career plans and disrupting my life put me into daily anxiety attacks.
