Has anyone been thru Maric college in San Diego? I've just been to their website and saw that they are offering not only LVN but also an Associate RN degree.
Anyone heard anything about Maric?
I know they offer LVN but since when did they start an RN program? I'm afraid that it is some kind of trick to just generate interest and then you go there and sure enough they don't really have the RN.

Ok I just made an appointment with Maric College in San Diego. Yes they do have an RN school there! I will post about it tomorrow after I come home. :)
I just got back from my interview with Maric College. What a nice place! Pretty pricey too but that is expected. It is a private college. You have to take all the same classes as if you were in a community college because the RN is an associate degree. You take all your science pre-requisite courses there then try for the RN program. They only accept 32 students and the RN program starts 2x a year. They pick from the students who are going to Maric. They go by who has the highest score on the entrance exam. You need a 175 to get in and my score was 195! My friend who took the test there didn't score high enough to qualify for the RN program so they told her to do the LVN program there and just do the transition program after that. She declined. Oh and to qualify for the LVN or RN you have to have medical experience. I'm in a CNA class right now so that would qualify me but I have to finish it first before I can go to Maric. Once you get in it goes fast. Maric runs on the quarter system and has runs during the summer too. The RN program runs straight for 18 months so you get to finish faster. That's what attracts me to the program. They have financial aid workshops every week and I am attending one so will see then if this is doable or not.
I know not many are reading this thread but I thought I would post this infor anyway so any future students could do a search and find this info here. :)

Hello Faeriewand
I just wanted to thank you for your posting. I was interested to find out info about Maric College. Could you please let me know if you can how much is the program in total? Also, what does the test consist of to qualify for the RN program? I am finishing my Associate Degree in Health Information Management this summer, do you think this would qualify as medical experience?
I actually have an appointment with National Unversity next Saturday, they also have an ADN program.
I am intersted in getting into a Nursing program in the fall 06 or winter 07.
hope to hear from you soon.
Thanks
Hi ansd.
I really loved Maric. They have a nice new campus with all new equipment and computers. The full cost for the RN program is about $44,000. (My cost would be less because I have so many classes out of the way already) The cost is just a round figure. That includes all your pre-requisite nursing classes though. A real plus is that they don't require Chemistry. I would advise you to go there and check it out. It is off of the 15 at Balboa exit. Then at the third light. Easy to spot. I understand National costs about the same.
With Maric college they have it all set up that you take your pre-requisite courses there for a year and then do the RN program. People are still competing to get in but your not going up against that many. They accept 32 students 2x a year. So accepting 64. They of course pick from their own students. The BON reviews them 2x a year. JMHO but it seems like they have a good program.
I do think you qualify as having previous experience. I did and yet I am only in school. I don't have a job doing CNA, just doing clinical. Make an appointment to check the place out because they are really nice and no pressure at all. You will talk to a counselor who can give you the facts. You can take your test that day or schedule it for another. They even allow you to take the test again in another week if you don't like your score. I like knowing where I stand so I was happy to test that day to see what areas I needed to bone up on. The test was two English parts and one part Math. it was an hour and fifteen minutes long.
The nursing pre-requisite courses are Microbiology, Anatomy/Physiolgy1 and Anatomy/Physiology 2. Maric also requires Biology first before you can take any of the others. Also, Maric has a 5 year recency requirement on the science courses.
The financial aid workshops which are held on Tuesday and Wednesday might answer any questions you have about how you could possibly afford it. I want to go to one of their financial aid workshops just to see. Post back and let me know how National was! :)
Hello again.
Thanks for your reply. I also read other postings about Maric college and I think I have a good understanding about their program. I will post a reply aobut NU as soon as I get there.

If you do a search on Maric you'll find several long threads about it. Not a fan of Maric for many reasons including price, quality of education, reputation in the community, NCLEX scores, accreditation concerns, length of program, misleading and pushy "salespeople" and did I mention PRICE? You can go to USD or Point Loma Nazarene for that kind of cash. I would only recommend Maric if 1) you have $40k burning a hole in your pocket and/or don't mind repaying student loans forever and ever 2)and are extremely impatient to get going and 3) have no interest in furthering your education down the line.

Several recent NU ADN grads at work tell me they are dropping the ADN program and keeping on their BSN program so you might want to consider that as the cost will be considerably more if you don't already have a bachelor's degree and prereqs out of the way.

If you plan on getting your BSN make sure you check if Maric's credits are transferrable to that school. My sister graduated from Maric's LVN program and she had to retake a lot of classes over because the RN programs that she is applying to won't accept Maric classes. Otherwise, she loved the school.

I have heard alot of bad things about Maric. I did go talk to them but quickly realized they are not worth the money. I have spoke to alot of people who went there and can't get a job. Their credits are not accepted at any of the colleges here. About the only place that will accept it is University of Phenix online. My advice is to get your CNA at one of the adult schools here. Some of these schools in So. county are Chula Vista Adult, National City adult, and Grossmont Health Occupations center in Santee (also Adult school). Then get on all the waitlists, as well as, asking Grossmont when there next DET exam is for their LVN program. Good Luck,Nikki

I'm in the RN program at Maric and I dig it. 100% of the RN grads from the last 2 classes are all employed today, not a real shock there's a nursing shortage in San Diego. They are accredited by the Ca BRN but not WASC. What doe that mean? You'll be a licensed registered nurse. If you want your Bachelors, you've got options but not as many. Your credits for the gen ed classes dont get accepted everywhere. National will accept your credits U of Phoenix will, Dominguez Hills will and theres one more that I cant think of right now. Additionally The online places like Kaplan (who owns Maric by the way) will always take you.
True it's pricey as heck. Someone said if you've got 40K burning a hole in your pocket... Well, that's about what it costs if you've got no credits to transfer in. However, if you've got 2 or 3 years to cool your heals on someones waiting list feel free. Me I needed to get moving.
Maric gets a bad rap and to tell you the truth I can see why. The admissions reps arent much better than used car salesmen. That's the impression that people are left with. The instructors though, are good, through, intellegent, and experienced. In my program I've got grads of their LVN program and some from the CNA program ( you need some kind of medical experience to be accepted to the RN program) None of them had any trouble getting jobs after they finished those programs either. All of them had no qualms about going back to Maric for their RN. Personally, this is my first experience with Maric and I'm satisfied. People will mean mouth the school but it'll get you where you want to go. If you have any questions and want to pm me, feel free.
aloha
