We started our first semester with 45...at the end of our first semester, we had 38 left.

We had 120 and now have 80 or so. Weed out is a good term.

Is the first semester terrible or is it as long as you understand and keep track of what you're learning you will do fine?

At my school they lost about half of the students the first semester. I was told that the hardest part was the transition to thinking like a nurse.

Within just the circles that I hang with, I can think of eight students that will not be coming back next week for second semester. We started as 110. I too am interested in seeing who will not be returning.
Mostly life happened to the ones that I know. One had child care problems, one's husband passed away, one just figured out that she didn't really want to be a nurse after all, another had financial problems; another got pregnant and decided no on nursing school, yes on being a SAH mommy, that kind of thing. Only two failed. One of them was weeded out before the end of the semester. It was a situation kind of like when the seargent tells Mayo (Richard Gere), "I want your DOR" (drop on request). She was weeded out before the semester ended. It was very clear from day one that she had no business being anywhere near patients. Another will be back to repeat the lecture portion.
First semester is difficult in that you are adjusting to nursing school life and perhaps dealing with patients and the whole hospital setting for the very first time. It is easy in that the material is fundamental. Literally, it is the foundation for coming attractions.

The first year of my BSN program was so ridiculously easy (and a waste of time, the first semester of it) that we only lost three. Two to pregnancy, and one moved. Second/Junior year is a different story. I will be a first semester senior next week (FINALLY) and of the 104 that we started with, 66 are left. Some are a semester behind because they had to retake or are retaking a class this semester. At my school, you can only retake one class. Best of luck to all, its been a long road and will be well worth it when we have our BSN's or ASN/ADN.

We started out with 18 in our online program (there were 75 in the onsite program) 2 dropped out and 1 failed. I have no idea about the actual numbers for the onsite program, but I heard they lost significantly more than we did.

I am beginning nursing school in a week or so. ( aaahhhhh!) Anyway, of my friends and coworkers that have graduated in the last few years they had all lost 1/4 to 1/2 of their classmates in the first semester. They said a lot of people don't realize the commitment, and others imagine nursing to be different than it turns out to be. SG

Thinking back...
I think one person failed first semester, but it wasn't the nursing class, it was the Clinical Nutrition class. But she had to retake the Nutrition class before she could go on. No one failed our first semester Nursing - as far as I know. Second semester I think one person quit after one day of clinicals - great at the book work, couldn't handle the actual clinicals. That semester there were also 5 people that failed but are back in and have two semesters to complete their BSN!
Good luck to everyone!

What do you mean by "1st semester senior"?
Our 1st semester was really easy also, well - we had theory and clinical lab only to learn how to do physical assessments. So pretty easy compared to what it is like now in our 4th out of 5th semster.

I'm guessing she means she's in the first semester of her senior year.
