Major Dilemma-MSW or Stay in Nursing

Published

I'm in my last semester of a MSN Nursing program. After much soul searching I have found that nursing is not for me (If I could, I would not continue on but I graduate in about 3 months). I have had this feeling since about the first semester (Fall 2010) in but thought that i should keep on trying and not give up.

My undergrad degree is in social work (May 2010) and found that I was the most happiest in this area and felt like I actually knew what i was doing here vs. nursing.

I had an interest in psych nursing but I was placed for my preceptorship in the ICU, which I really had no desire to do. I asked for OB/Labor and Delivery (I had a summer clinical that I liked) since psych wasn't an option for my preceptorship. This placement pretty much confirmed that I desire in nursing is decreasing daily.

Major Question: Should I go back for my MSW (it would only be a year b/c I already have the foundation already) or take the NCLEX and try to find a position in psych. I have no nursing experience other than clinicals.

The one thing that would keep me in nursing would be if i could get a case management position since the nursing and undergrad nursing could be utilized in an area like that. However, i have read posts and other things on the web that say you need years of experience to be RN case manager. Is it possible to be a case manager as a new grad?

Go with your heart. If you don't want to be in nursing, then go back and get your social work degree. There are some positions that will give you case management jobs right out of school, but it's really quite different than social work. If you want to be a social worker, then that's what you should do.
