Ted, sorry you are having a hard time, I'm in So. Maine. I understand that transferring in goes quicker than being accepted from scratch. Put your name in down here and COME ON DOWN! Meanwhile plug at it, taking courses that won't really affect how you do nursing care.

You can private message me if you like, take care!

Im in Highschool in Southern Maine and i wanted to kno if what he said was true what are the classes like at USM? are they as bad as he makes them seem? help:o

I haven't been in school for some time now, but the new grads and students I talk to seem to do ok there. Haven't seen nobody cry yet!

Good luck in your search, feel free to send a private message too!

So sorry to hear of your experience at UM Fort Kent. I graduated from USM @ 25 years ago. It was not a bad school, but I still did not care for it. Too impersonal. What are you studying? I decided to go back to school at the age of 49 to get my RN. I chose to go the ADN route at SMCC in So. Portland, ME. I LOVE IT!!!!! The school is small and personal, I am getting more hands on clinical then I would going the BSN route (besides I don't want to go into administration),the instructors and administrators have an open door policy and are available for students and want to assure that you succeed, our nursing program has a 100% graduation rate. The school is geared toward your success. The only Greek organization is Phi Theta Kappa (the equivalent of the 4 year school's Phi Beta Kappa). I have never enjoyed school as much as I am now. The challenges have been great, but I haven't had to go through alone.

Sorry to here that you're having a hard time. You definitely need clinical experience! I have a good friend who is an MD in Fort Kent. I spent a very short time there, and thought the hospital was horrible - I used to travel nurse, and have alot to compare it to! I am thinking of relocating to Maine, though, but not sure what the wages are like.

I just graduated last week from the University of Maine nursing program in Orono. As far as clinical experience goes, you have 3 med/surg clinicals, a peds/maternity/ob, a mental health, and community. Each one of those clinicals were 84 hours each. You also have a preceptorship at a hospital your final semester and you must get 200 hours before your are allowed to graduate. I got plenty of experience and feel very well prepared. As far as professors go, they are all very well educated but some of them are not very helpful when it comes to things like helping you figure out how to apply for the NCLEX exam for example. Hope this helps anyone thinking of applying at UMO.

I live in Presque Isle, I'm going to NMCC in the Spring.

I haven't heard things like that about UMFK before. My mom's friend who is a nurse recently got her RN-BSN degree online from UMFK so I guess that really wouldn't tell me how it is.

Personally, I've lived here my whole life and I've been to Fort Kent a few times and I would never want to live there.

Just curious, why would you never want to live there?

I heard it is a bilingual area - the french-speaking new brunswick area is right across the border.

I wouldn't want to live in Fort Kent either. The town is fine but I've heard "outsiders" say that they've never been accepted. And I guess if you can't speak French then you're REALLY an outsider.

My experience with the hospital staff has only been "ok". A lot of them haven't been very nice.

Hi all-

Well let's see...I'm currently a junior in Fort Kent in their nursing program. I transferred with another degree. The hospital is not much to look at, I know they are making some changes etc..some very long awaited changes..but as far as hospital care goes-I have dual citizenship and have seen "close up and personal" the beautiful big hospital right across the border in Canada. While it is beautiful, the service there is absolutely horrendous. If you think the teachers at school can be a bit snobbish-they've got nothing on the Canadian hospital staff about 25 miles from Fort Kent,Maine. I've personally been a patient in Fort Kent and can honestly say I was never treated with more respect than when I was there. I guess it is hard to judge a book by its cover...I've seen a different side of them. AS far as the instructors go, there are some that do have attitudes-but I've never been one to be put aside by them when I had something legit to talk about-I made myself heard just fine. They do ocasionally have their "off" days-I'm sorry that someone has felt put off by them. I just figure I pay big enough bucks to be here, come hell or high water-I'm going to get my answers and I persevere until I do. I hope that helps. They are busy with their projects no doubt-don't let the gruff exterior send you in the other direction-keep on and override it-usually they develop more respect for you and begin to recognize when they themselves have overstepped.

I can't say I've felt like an outsider in Fort Kent-even though I have lived in Canada and elsewhere-I also don't spend much time there. The upside and downfall to any small town is that everyone will pretty much know everyone else (the upside is that you might be safer), the downside is that everyone knows your business (not such a good thing)-I guess it is determined by what is more important to you-safety or privacy-sometimes both eventually mesh and you can have the best of both worlds-sometimes it isn't such a neat process to get there. Take a gander across the border in neighboring Canada-I've been there (where people live outside their means, and everyone tries to outdo their neighbor)-I think Fort Kent will look like a nice cozy town in comparison to the attitudes you might find. These are just some opinions from someone who has lived both places. I do hope however that things are better for the person who had problems with teachers etc..

I am working on my pre-reqs to get into the nursing program at KVCC in Fairfield.

I have already passed the Hesi2.

I did a LOT of research before choosing KVCC and frankly, I wouldn't consider any of the universities - Fort Kent, Augusta etc. After speaking w/nurses, recruiters and students at KVCC and UMA, the students coming out of the technical colleges are simply better prepared. They are in clinicals the first semester building confidence in their skills, learning their way around the hospitals and building that every important teamwork!

And if finances are an issue - big one for me!! ---- the technical colleges are cheaper by nearly 2/3!

I love KVCC. The staffers are awesome, the tutors have "been there" and actually care that you make it. Think about it :)
