LVN position in corrections interview help

Published

I have an interview for a LVN position in corrections in a couple of weeks. I’m so excited because I’ve been in home health about 6 months and this is the only other interview I’ve had gotten offered in the last few months but I’m scared because I dont know what to expect. Can anyone who’s a current or former corrections nurse please give me some pointers? What should I study up on? How do I dress to my interview? Thanks!

Honestly, I wasn’t asked any difficult questions other than what hours I can work. Depending on how short staffed your area is, they will gladly hire a new grad. Don’t underestimate your worth! I was low-balled and I had to negotiate my pay twice. Keep an open mind and it’s ok if you realize it’s not for you. You’re going to see a lot of trauma (inmates or “patients” stabbing each other, injuries from guards, suicides, overdose, rape etc.) and I’m not sure what kind of clinical experience you have, but be ready for anything. Don’t take anyone, including coworkers at face value and always watch your back! It’s your license. If you don’t feel safe, don’t do it.

Hey @NurseCelia How did the interview go? What kind of questions did they ask you and did you feel prepare?

It went well. The only question that threw me off was “what do you know about our institution?” Which I was absolutely not prepared for otherwise it was really general like can you handle an environment where you have to be on your toes and follow all regulations they wanted to know more if I was able to deal with what was going on in the prisons vs what kind of nursing skills I had. I unfortunately did not get the job but I did get a job as a school nurse and it makes about $10 more an hour than the corrections job did

Specializes in ICU.

My corrections interview asked actual nursing type questions. I was given a piece of paper and was told to read the questions outloud and answer them as thoroughly as possible. The questions had stuff like what was wrong with these med orders, should I give these meds, this patient has these s&s what should i do, etc.
