LVN New Grad. Should I take this job? Please help!

Published

Hi guys! Im new to allnurses.com and I signed up because I've figured that who else can help me but my fellow nurses? So anyways, I have a question.

Im being offered an on-call job at a convalescent hospital in Los Angeles. They said that someone is quitting soon to purse their RN degree so I will eventually land a full-time position. They also said that I will only be trained for two days, 3 if i ask for an extra day, and the nurse patient ratio is 1 to 45-50. Now Im just curious to know if that will be too overwhelming especially for a new grad? Im a little afraid to take the job because the number of beds I will be assigned to and all the duties it comes with (admissions, transfers, discharge, manual daily and weekly charting, meds, emergencies, and the unavoidable family concerns) My two sisters are LVNs as well and the max beds that they hold is 35 and they say that its pretty stressful already. So i cant even imagine 45-50! But as a new grad I feel like I NEED to take it because Im not really getting any calls from the places (mostly facilities) that Ive applied to and my bills arent going away. It has actually risen because of my school loans. Any advice guys?

Take the job.

You live in an area that is glutted with too many LVNs and virtually no jobs for new grads like yourself. Southern California has a horrid nursing job market right now. If you do not accept this job, it might be another year before you receive a call for another interview.

Take the job Kristine. I assume that you are an at-will employee like 99% of the jobs are so you can leave any time you want if you can't handle it.

I am a recent graduate too and I regretted not taking the offer for me on my first week of job hunting because the salary was a bit low. I am now on week 4 and only had my 1st interview but I am not yet giving up. :)

Take the job and leave if you can't handle it. And if you decide to do so please let me know which company and where you were hired. Good luck!

@thecommuter yeah, I was thinking the same thing. Im just really scared to do something wrong while having 45-50 patients on my hands and possibly losing my license, you know? its a little overwhelming just thinking about it.

@illusionist well heres the thing. The administrator that interviewed me said that the previous person that they just hired quit after 3 days because of stress. Now she said she doesnt wanna hire someone that will probably do the same thing once the new employee feels the stress of the job because they dont wanna waste their time training this new person if theyll quit anyways after 3 days. Now Im a go getter type of person, but for some reason I cant help but feel scared to take this job. Do you also live in los angeles?

@kristinelouise

Yes. I live in Los Angeles. :)

Don't worry about what the administrator say, if they don't want their employees to leave it is up to them to either pay more and/or give them less patient load.

@illusionist well i spoke to them today and theyre gonna put me on the 11-7 shift. that should be less hectic than the day shifts, so im glad (: you can try applying at the company. its called serrano south convalescent. the north branch is across the street. they also called me but i turned it down because i liked the aura at the south branch better. lol. maybe you can grab the position at north?

I'll go tomorrow. :) If I get the job you are coming with me on K-town for korean bbq. :))

@illusionist heh, im literally there at least once a week! i hate living near ktown. haha. ive pribably gained 15lbs since I moved to LA. do you also live near ktown?

Yes. I used to work there as well. :) I love ktown and k-bbq. :p

@illusionist oh nice! then youre not that far from Serrano (: Goodluck tomorrow! Ill be orienting across the street. hehe

So how was your work? Did you like it? I don't have any luck at all. :(

That's a normal ratio on night shift, unfortunately.
