I don't know, but I would love to find out. There is nothing on the BVNPT website that addresses dual licensure. But, I would think that it would be as simple as taking the modules that differ from the LVN curriculum, mainly Psychology and Pharmacology, and then being able to challenge the board. The worst that can happen is that you'd have to actually sit for the exam. If you find out, let us all know...

An LVN cannot challenge the LPT boards however an LVN can apply and work in the capacity of a LPT. A LPT cannot however work in the capacity of an LVN. W
The thing is i have heard about alot of people wanting to challenge the lvn boards and they are psych techs but when i search for the opposite lvn to lpt, i find nothing. I just dont know why LVNs wouldnt be able to transition to LPTs.

An LVN does not need to challenge the board. As an LVN you can work psych. An LPT however can not work as an LVN. LPTs are lisenced solely for psych. They do very little if any nursing on the job other than pass meds. They learn basic and I do mean basic med surg in school, and need additional Med surg, pediatric and maternal health if they desire to bridge to RN.. As far as I am aware there is currently only one school which allows LPTs to bridge to RN (West Hills College, Lemore) and even that program is closed until further notice. In my professional opinion, you are better off remaining an LVN with the option to work psych and bridge to RN.

LVN to LPT license can be challenged by Method #2 as stated on the bvnpt.ca.gov website
LVNs need 108 hours of developmental disabilities and 108 hours of mental disabilities
108 HOURS OF THEORY (EXPERIENCE MAY NOT BE SUBSTITUTED FOR FORMAL COURSE WORK) AND 270 HOURS OF SUPERVISED CLINICAL EXPERIENCE IN MENTAL DISORDERS, COVERING THE CONTENT IN TITLE 16, CALIFORNIA CODE OF REGULATIONS SECTION 2587(d)(11) AND INCLUDING VERBAL AND WRITTEN COMMUNICATION SKILLS. YOU MAY SUBSTITUTE PAID INPATIENT BEDSIDE WORK EXPERIENCE IN MENTAL DISORDERS FOR THE 270 HOURS OF SUPERVISED CLINICAL EXPERIENCE. D. 108 HOURS OF THEORY (EXPERIENCE MAY NOT BE SUBSTITUTED FOR FORMAL COURSE WORK) AND 270 HOURS OF SUPERVISED CLINICAL EXPERIENCE IN DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES, COVERING THE CONTENT IN TITLE 16, CALIFORNIA CODE OF REGULATIONS SECTION 2587(D)(10) AND INCLUDING VERBAL AND WRITTEN COMMUNICATION SKILLS. We do a lot more than basic nursing. We don't just pass meds. It's a lot more than you think. Just wanted to clarify that statement.
