Hi guys, I am a new LVN Grad who just finished my preceptorship. I started out with a great preceptor for 7 shifts then had really bad ones the past few days. I don't feel ready to be on my own because there are so many things I'm not sure of (judgment calls, procedures, etc.). I'm hoping the RN's will go with me the first time if I am not sure how to do something. I work on team nursing with 11-15 patients and it's very stressful. I'm not sure how I can do it on my own. I am 48 going through menopause and my stress level is really bad right now. I need to make this work. I have waited to be a nurse all my life. But I just feel clumsy with the clinical stuff. I was an A student in nursing school, but just takes me longer to catch on to the procedure stuff. I'm working on my prereqs for RN, but almost think that is too much for me right now. Any suggestions or thoughts from you guys who can remember how it was to be new would help me right now. I seem to always be late with meds with so many patients discharges, procedures, etc. Thanks for your help guys. You are my heros!!!! Happy nurses week to you all. God bless you guys. :saint:

Oh i remember starting my first LPN job at 34. Just go slow and dont let yourself be distracted when you are doing something. When you are passing meds, dont let someone interrupt your checks or administration of the meds. Ask them to please wait until you finish with that patient. You will have people coming up to the med cart to chat, avoid the small talk until you are done.

Procedure wise,, by all means make sure you ask for someone to come with you until you are comfortable doing something. Thats not to much to ask. If there is something you really dont know about at all, ask the Nurse manager to have someone walk you through it (or her) so you can understand the equipment or whatever. You will do ok, just be patient and dont let yourself get rushed.

Everyone has those flutters of nerves when they first go it alone. But you arent alone.

Mimi.....Meown has some good advice here. I wish you luck! You CAN do it; I believe in you.
