LVN or BSN - San Diego - Help!

Published

So we need help! The frustrations of trying to get into nursing in California are just awful! My daughter is finishing her associates degree at a local community college. She will be moving to the San Clemente/Oceanside area in the summer (her boyfriend is in the Marines stationed at Camp Pendelton). Her grades are not great and I don't think she will get accepted to a uc nursing program. So - she is looking at private nursing schools. Anyone have any input? I think there is Kaplan, National and West Coast in Anaheim. Here's another question - should she get her LVN then BSN? What about getting a CNA first? So many different routes to take - any help would be appreciated! She is so depressed from not being able to REALLY do what she wants and now feels like maybe she shouldn't go into nursing since its so hard. I know she can do it and I am really encouraging her to keep going!

Maybe the low grades are a sign that this is not the right field for her. UC and CSU are only for students with outstanding grades, not just above average. Community college nursing programs are lottery based in California once you meet the minimum GPA and test scores required to apply. If her numbers aren't good enough to go into a lottery based admissions selection rather than merit based admissions, then I think this may not be the right field for her. She might be less depressed doing something else instead.

The other thing about California is that there is a huge number of unemployed nurses looking for a job due to the very bad economy here. I work at a government agency in CA where we are laying off another 30 nurses. When we were hiring for RNs last summer, there were over 530 applicants who passed the initial screening which involves checking for possession of the RN license. With the layoffs, those 30 will have preferential rehire over the 530. How is she going to payoff those loans from private school nursing programs when there are no jobs?

Many of the cc nursing schools in that area are wait lists, and they generally run about 3 yrs long (I believe all of the ccs in SD county are wait list; not as sure about the OC). I have heard that many of the for-profit schools are not well respected by employers, and it's hard enough to get a job out there right now, as it is. What about going back to get a bachelors, getting better grades and then looking at getting a BSN (either through a traditional program or a 2nd degree program (Cal State San Marcos has one, as does SDSU, National and I believe Point Loma and Azusa Pacific)? Despite the poor job outlook for new nurses in that area, it is still extremely competitive to get into nursing school. Poor grades probably aren't going to cut it at any level.

I would go straight for the BSN if she dont have any other responsibilities... dedicate herself and reach her goals.. God will work out the rest.. I was a medical assistant for 6 yrs, got my commercial class B driver license and drove public/school buses(so much fun), went back and got my LPN/LVN in 2009 and now I am trying to decide which program to attend to complete prereqs for BSN.. I also have a 12yr and a 4 mon old, and a husband and i work full time . There are jobs out there.. everything from government to private... just think positive and remember that its not how you start, but its how you finish! best wishes:nurse:

@Janettezp Hi guys I attentd National University(LPN-BSN) and they are Regionally accredited.... but Kaplan(ADN), and is NOT!Per rep. some of Kaplan's credits do transfer to University of Phoenix? Not sure about the others.... Good luck! I recommend BSN(4 yr degree) because you will be more marketable..... :-) Take care!

how long did the lpn-bsn program take? what if you have all the pre-reps and all you need are the core nursing classes?
