Advice please, for new grad seeking position in LTC. Thank you.

Hi. I'm getting my resume and coverletter ready to apply for a job in LTC and want to be professional. I am a new (and older) grad who has been out of the job market for quite a number of years.

My question is about addressing the cover letter. Sources I've seen and heard have conflicting information. Some say call the facility for the name and title of the person who hires nurses, some say no one does that anymore address your coverletter to "whom it may concern" and still others are saying you don't need a cover letter at all. I really want to do this right. And would appreaciate your point of view.

Also, do job seekers walk into facilities and fill out applications anymore, or is everthing done electronically now?

Always go above and beyond. A cover letter will never hurt you, not having one might. Why not put yourself above the rest, especially in this economy,even if not required. I would also recommend calling the LTC facility and stating exactly that. "To whom can I address my cover letter to." Maybe even going into the facility to ask may get you some face time with HR/recruiter.

I disagree, though, that it's necessary to find out the name of the hiring manager. "To whom it may concern" is fine.

Most facilities don't do handwritten applications anymore. They're mostly online. But there's nothing wrong with walking in wearing clean, professional clothes, resume in hand and politely asking if they're accepting applications. Couldn't hurt. Maybe they'll even direct you to a computer in the HR office and let you apply then and there.
