Hi, I'm a LPN that graduated in 2007. I haven't worked much because I've had to stay home with my kids, so I haven't gotten much job experience. I recently got hired as a new LPN in an urgent care clinic about an hour away from my home. I'm just wondering if this is a good place to start out though as an inexperienced LPN?? Especially after reading some of the posts on here. So, is urgent care a good place to get trained as a new LPN?? I've heard they're basically mini ER's..... I'm supposed to start Monday, but am getting nervous now.

I personally wouldnt consider them a mini ER since emergencies are different than "urgent" care....urgent care is supposed to be for minor things to help people avoid clogging up an ER for stuff like flu, colds, viruses, sprains etc. I wish we had one close ...but the closest one in my area is about 30 plus mins away. I think they really come in handy for alot of people but as far as being inexperienced.....why not? Its as good a place as any to get a start because each area is so different yet so similar if that makes sense. Try it out and good luck to ya.

I work in Urgent Care and love the fact that you never know what's going to walk through the door next. Sasha is right, it's not really a mini er, but more of a doctors office. As long as the situation is not life threatening, we'll evaluate the pt. & treat as necessary. Right now we're seeing alot of sore throats and flu sx. So there's a lot of rapid strep & flu A/B tests done. I've assisted the provider with stitches, I & D's, ear lavage, given many IM injections as well as PPDs. I think it's a wonderful opportunity to learn about a wide variety of ailments/conditions. Good luck to you.

urgent care here in TN is considered like people who have insurance or non insurance and will pay up front to see a doctor over the flu, sprains, physicals. You will have worker's comp and other employees form other companies send their employees in for physicals and injects/vaccines. Drug test as well.
Nothing life threatening. And it is a good job for an LPN who doesn't have allot of experience, cause you will gain allot of experience.
It would be a fun job, some days will be busy, some will not. :) you may find out to really like it. Goodluck!
Thanks for all of your replies... they make me feel better. I live in VA., but will actually be driving over the border to the state of TN. to work. Therefore the urgent care I will be working in is in TN., about an hour away from where I live. I hope I like it! I start tommorrow. I always just HATE being new to stuff... lol
Good luck you will do fine!!! lol hope you like it here in TN lol.
Yeah, I'll be fine I guess... lol What part of TN. are you from? I will be working in the northeast area...
I work in Knoxville, but I live right below knoxville on the TN/NC borderline... near the 129 Dragon if you have ever heard of that.
Sounds like you will be in the tricities area, nice area :)
Yep! I know where the Dragon is! My hubby rode that with his cousin a while back on their motorcycyles... he loved it! I finally worked my first night in urgent care last night... it was a very busy place! We seen over 200 patients in 11 hours. I don't know if it's for me or not... I'm gonna continue to look for something more local, that isn't as far away from home. Take care...
