LPN wage question

Published

I have an interview in a few days with a physician's office for an LPN position. I'm a recent graduate with no prior experience. I was asked what pay I was expecting and her response to what I said was that I was expecting too much just having graduated and to get that I'd need to go to a hospital or LTC. I had said 14-16, 14 being the lowest. Is that out of line for me to think I should get that?? I'm having a hard time finding average hourly wage for LPN's in the VA beach area for a physician office. I'm also not sure how low I should go when/if accepting this job. Please help!!

I thought $15 -$18 for LPN around here was the starting rate.... shoot you start at $10 at the pharmacy (retail) with no school and no experience. I would expect to be paid considerably higher than that.

I hope in 2 years when I have graduated with my LPN it will be higher. (shucks CNA is $10 an hour and you can get that in 4 weeks worth of part time school...)

I was told by our career services adviser that the wages for an office job are 14-16. I kind of feel like I'd be an MA with an LPN education... Maybe I should just pass on this job, but I'm so hesitant to do that since I just graduated!!

Specializes in GI, ER, ICU, Med/Surg, Stress Test Nurse.

As a new graduate LPN in 2000 I started out at $12 an hr in an acute care facility. I would expect acute care would be more today, typically LPN makes $2-$5 more an hour in LTC here. Now the Dr. office usually pays less.

I wouldn't pass on any job, but if offered the job talk to them about the pay. They might increase it. If not take it and keep looking, it is easier to get a job while you have a job.

Specializes in Geriatrics.

I started out at $16.50 in a LTC facility

I live in va beach and my first facility job 3 years ago was 13.42 ..so hopefully its gone up..my friend works as an MD office she started at 15.00

An interview is your opportunity to sell yourself! A rate is never SET in stone. My very first job as a LPN I started at $18 an hour with $3 additional shift diff in 2006, in long term care. That said, different fields of nursing offer different opportunities for each of us. If you are in need of a 9-5, and the office is close to home, etc.....then it may work for you for the moment. It is always a great idea to add certifications to your license for your preferred field of nursing. Sell yourself!!! You never know what may happen:) Good luck:)
